Re: Spares: what do you carry?

Spare hands.
Know your mates jobs but know when the call of front covers the deck, the cool of front will soon follow suit. Switch seats if trading spots with each other.

These two should be standard on all marine power plants:
I installed a 1 micron fuel polisher and no longer need to replace Racor elements.
I installed a 1 micron crankcase oil cleaner and no longer change oil or filters.
Would you be interested in sharing more information on your fuel polishing and oil cleaning systems? I have been contemplating doing these upgrades on my boat and would be interested in your approaches and recommendations.

Thanks,

I sailed into Eden on the NSW coast with a lot of Severe damage from a Gale I went through,
I was there 6 weeks trying to get new parts,
Solar Panels, Batterys, VHF, Alternator for the Diesel, New solar controllers, Etc Etc Etc,
I could buy it all online, Fleabay, But they wont deliver to Post offices, Or Boats,
They need a physical address,

Or I could pay astronomical prices from local shops, If they had it, Most didnt and had no idea on what I wanted,
I ended up getting all my parts delivered to a local Auto parts store that I bought all my new batterys from,
Very nice of them, If it wasnt for them, I would still be in Eden waiting for parts,

Eden is a big fishing Port, But getting parts or some one to repair any thing is virtually impossible,
Other towns I have visited, Have Zero repair or parts to buy,

If you dont have it onboard, Your cactus and if its essential, Your stuck there till you can get it from some where else, That could be weeks down the line,

Offshore, You need all the spares in the cupboard ready to use,

Pumps and Filters, Impellors, I have 4 of each, Brand new,
Spare oils and green water for the motor, Drive leg, etc etc,
All the tools I would ever require to fix, repair or remanufacture any thing on board,
When that’s happened to me , I will do business with a Marina amd rent a slip or mooring if necessary to generate a delivery address. . I’ll buy what they have and what they don’t I’ll do what you did and ask to have it to my ‘temporary address’ at their marina.

Eden dont have a Marina, Only swing moorings, Bouys, So no address,
No VHF, No Solar Panels, No Batterys, = No motor, So couldnt sail to next port for supplies,

Re: Spares: what do you carry?

Having an address at a marina is good, but lots of cruisers we've run into just use "General Delivery" as an address.....and according to them it works very well. 'Course that's in USVI, with a US Post Office! Depending on where you're at, may be an option to consider vs paying high marina fees just to have an address!
