Southern California Broker

I am looking for a good broker in the LA basin that would help me find my next boat.
I am in the marker for a 40 to 45 , 2 cabins, clean monohull , Jeanneau, Hunter,
Bavaria, Elan, Beneteau, etc.
Must have fresh engine, rigging, bow thrusters, AC, in boom or in mast main furling ( preferred ), davits and some combinaison of solar or wind turbine, generator and water maker would be a great plus. Cockpit enclosure Bimini and dodger are a must as well.
2000 to 2015 range .
I will be living aboard at a marina , so comfort vs speed is more what I am looking at.
Budget is 200K max.

Re: Southern California Broker

Not sure that one broker is better than another. I'd say find some boats that interest you and contact the agent to go look at them. The brokers basically do the same you you do. Sometimes they know of boats coming on the market, but it's usually not a fit anyway.

As an example, here's one in Ventura: https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/200...-43ds-8843641/

Generator, watermaker, heat, in-mast furling, etc.

Re: Southern California Broker

Hello, laurentct,

The deal with brokers is that they want to make money for themselves: your desire for a boat is something most of them will try to manipulate to fit what they have on offer. When we were looking for this boat, we were thrown out of the office by a broker who said there were no boats that met our 23 criteria (yes, a long list). But at least he didn't waste our time. And eventually we found one who understood and actually did try to help us find what we wanted.

So I'm going to offer you some free advice (you already know it's worth what you pay for it): believe what a broker says to you, after you have verified it from another disinterested source. And have a look at what a CF member, boatpoker, has given to CF members: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...1-a-78671.html

Good luck in your search. Fwiw, we have a 46 ft. boat, with 2 furling headsails, so a lot of windage forward, and do not think the boat needs a bow thruster--instead, we use lines to control what the boat does, and there are many archived threads here on CF about the use of spring lines, for both boats with crew and singlehanders. One would use the CF Custom Google Search, under the Search menu.

Ann

Re: Southern California Broker

I worked with Ian Van Tuyl out of San Diego as the selling broker and had a good experience.

Re: Southern California Broker

here is my just on buying the boat. Go to the various boat selling sites (yachtworld etc) and find a boat you think fits the bill. Then contact the selling broker directly. Adding a buyers broker only cuts in half the selling brokers commision and adds little value to you (IMHO). At the end of the day , it will be you buying the boat and you need to do your due diligence.
good luck with the hunt

Re: Southern California Broker

I'm another who wouldn't try to use a buyer's broker ... our own experience was not good, I suspect for the economic reasons already noted. We did get a couple of calls but only about boats brokered by his own brokerage. I suspect that you'd get that from any selling broker after you've made a serious inquiry about one of their listed boats. You need to put some of your own time into the search imo but a lot of that is internet time so easily done. Use boatpoker's guide so that you don't waste money on unnecessary surveys. You'll know when you've found the "right" boat and be much better placed to assess its market value. Best of luck with your search.
