Re: Something for the long keel disses..

Not really suprised the yawl is passing that modern sloop. The sloop can't really sail. Watch the genoa, he's got it starting to back wind for most of the time until he is forced to bear off a bit and then only then it actually starts to draw and heel the boat over a bit.

Having said that I have a ketch with a reputation as one that can't really sail and I regularely keep up with a tartan 41 and valiant at my club and occasionaly even pass!

True.. but even then the yawl holds its own.. plus hands down stiffer, smoother and outright better looking against the longer wl fin sloop.

Glad there is actual photographic proof that a split rig isn't that slow! Still will not be enough for the naysayers though.

Re: Something for the long keel disses..

A similar thing happened in a Seabuoy race I was in.

A Hobie 16 cruised right over the big waves coming in Pensacola Pass as we were going out.

Most of us were sailing plumb bow 20' Beach Cats like the Nacra 6.0 but the Hobie 16 with it's shorter waterline and rocker bows rode over the waves much better that day.

It was also a light wind day like in the video above and those of us sailing the 20' plumb bow boats couldn't power through but were slamming down hard as we cleared each incoming wave.

I believe the Hobie 16 won on handicap.

Something for the long keel disses..

Look, a better sailed boat can often pass a supposed faster boat. I claim never to have been passed by a fellow cruiser in my Tartan 40. (There may be selective memory and some skewed excuses involved in this claim[emoji3])And, I pass a lot of bigger boats that are either poorly sailed or undercanvassed (furling main, bad sail trim, small Genoa, etc) and don’t conclude anything about boat design.

When I had my Luders 33, I also used to pass “faster boats” but it’s not because of the long keel, it’s because of reaching and/or better sail trim. I thought it was a pretty fast boat but came to learn a lot was due to my knowing how to sail it well.
Upgraded to a faster cruiser and it’s a world of difference…

PCMM- Morgan OI faster than a T41 is impressive sailing but I bet if you traded boats with the T41 owner you’d leave them behind over the horizon

Ha ha- maybe better said is “it’s not the length of your keel, it’s how you use it”

Roller furling main doesn't look too good.

Re: Something for the long keel disses..

Pfffttttt. The ketch was coming down on the sloop - of course it was going faster. It wasn't so fancy when the ketch had to luff up a bit to get past.

A real sailor would have borne away and overtaken the sloop under its lee ( anyone can overtake to windward)- then luffed up a bit to let the sloop get ahead under her lee before overtaking a second time to leeward.

That is what a real smart arse clever dick show off sailor would have done.

Re: Something for the long keel disses..

The sloop was driving with the brakes on (with his jib luffing.) I do that when I want to take pictures of my friend on his boat. In this case he might not have been doing it intentionally.
Was that a Mariner 31?

If your asking about the yawl, it's a Nantucket Clipper built in the UK in the 70's..
The sloops just another characterless bit of white plastic..

Characterless or not (I tend to agree with the former), the skipper does actually need to sail it...
