Some questions about a boat I´m interested in..

Hello I need some help figuring out how and what to do with this boat that I have a good deal on. (I think )


"Crack" in keel, supposed to be like that?
Does it look ok? What needs to be done here?
Sanding, painting and we good?


This is the old, broken saildrive engine that is going to be replaced with an electric solution. Problem is that I first thought the outer part(what is it called?) was fine and I could just replace the engine but it seems like its broken too. What are my options here? How much and where do I get a new saildrive outer part that I can then put the electric motor on to?
The Oceanvolt systems are just way to expensive.

What make/model of boat is it?

Can't tell you much about the keel, but check out Sailing Uma on youtube, they did an electric conversion on their boat. I think they've been through a few different options and have a fancy system now, but originally they cobbled it together from random parts.

by crack do you mean the horizontal line that turns vertical then turns diagonal? That is a repair or extension to the keel.

That " Crack " is just the joint line where the lead or iron ballast keel is bolted on to the vessel . Check the bolts but looks to me like just fairing compound and bottom paint .

As to that ancient saildrive what does the lower unit look like the picture you posted just shows the evinrude outboard boatmotor side of it . If the lower is goof you can just remove the engine and go from there with your electric conversion .

It´s a rare breed called passad.
I have watched them but from what I could tell they suddenly had a saildrive, probably bought used, it looks like, which they used with their oceanvolt.

Yes that one. Is it a red flag?

No crack there, its the stub ballast joint.

Not a red flag. As others have said it is where the lower part of the keel was bolted on. You just need to check the keel bolts. They are located in the bilge. A quick search will find threads on how to check them, but it would be helpful to know the make and model of boat to know if the keel is lead, iron, etc.

I got my elec inboard from thunderstruck-ev.com

It was $6k ish, Inc mounting & gearing assembly.

They're awesome folks, I even got the kit open, realized I was in over my head, called em and they agreed to take it back, wire all the individual bits together and label the rest in a "for dummy's" manner, and send it back.

Cannot reccomend high enough, 287 out of 5 stars.

As far as the sail drive issue, if the lower is bum - drop it, glass the hole up, install a cutlass bearing/prop shaft and you're good to go.

Or torqueedo, I've heard of a 33' Benny bopping around the Caribbean with a 10hp one quite happily. Dunno how that works, but that's what I've heard. It's a hell of a lot easier to mock up an outboard bracket than a direct drive or sail drive, after all. Plus, elec outboards won't get swamped, so you get rid of a ton of the issues ICE outboards have (apply extra silicone lol)

Exaqt Indefatiguable has the right idea. Why not put an electric outboard in a well at the stern? I prefer that to a bracket on the transom as you can keep the motor drier.
