pirate Slipped rudder..

Well it seems the Hanse Voorsprungcrappydeutschtechniqe continues..
For some reason the starboard rudder decided to slip downwards and will not pull back up into place so the delivery is delayed till at least Friday when we are lifted out to inspect and try to rectify the problem.. hopefully it can be restored to the correct position and we can continue.
Seems a very fragile cowboyish setup.. all that seems to hold it in place are three grub screws that tighten onto a flush surface.. no little indent to bite into..
The Germans may be big in cars but Oh my Gawd with boats..

OOOOh, Mon, Boatie, you're going to be in bad trouble, breaking the owner's Hanse!

Hope they're able to make a good fix, quickly.

Re: Slipped rudder..

Yep, the rudders on BMWs and Mercs seldom give any trouble at all!

That is pretty shabby construction IMO...

Moody by name only.. Hanse by build..
Luckily the owner (fellow CF member) is my crew along with son in law so they know its nothing we have done.
Seems a flaw in the rudder systems design.. Jefa steering according to the markings.. one side has slipped down far enough to expose all the top bearings.
Thought things were going too well.. 1000nm in 7 days including a night in La Coruna..
The gods have a wicked sense of humour..

Just for you Don... one off how it should look and two off how it shouldn't..
Not much to see down below.. apart from the stressed out linkage.

Re: Slipped rudder..

Thanks Boatman for indulging me!
Now which ones are the "wrong" and which one is "right?"
Sometimes I really like my inefficient old bronze post keel-hung rudder.....that hasn't been touched in 50 years...

The one with the strap (blue) holding it up.. if you look closely you can even see the bearings either side.
The one without the strap holding it up is the good one.. note how flush to the top it is.. and unsupported to boot.

Re: Slipped rudder..

Ahhh, you don't need that "extra" rudder anyway. Just sail on one tack, so the busted one is out of the water!!!
