Sanders used an S&S 34 cos it was what he owned at the time, Dicks used his mum's boat cos that is what Sanders used, Martin's dad bought him one cos that is what Sanders and Dicks had used, and so it followed along with Watson.

I have been knocked flat a few times, I think it is just what happens in a small boat when the weather gets real nasty. I never heard about Pink Lady's 360 roll until now. Considering she completed her trip unassisted and nonstop, that's even more impressive.

Regardless of the reasons, the above mentioned people sailed the S&S34 on their circumnavigations and the fact that the boats completed the trips and the sailors came home safe is a testament to the boat. I doubt there is another boat in that size with the S&S34's track record of single hand nonstop high latitude circumnavigations.Could better boats exist...sure, but the people who are basing their boat decisions on ultimate reliability and survivability keep choosing the S&S34.

I believe Knox-Johnston used Sulia because that was the boat he had. He had been looking for a sponsor so he could get a proper boat, but it didn't work out.

Narrow beam, full keel, tiller steered between 26 and 34 feet long would be my ballpark starting point.

Perhaps the boats fit their budgets better than something new, much more expensive, and purpose built for singlehanded racing (or 'record setting') in the Southern Ocean?

G'day,
I have sailed the world singlehanded including the Great Southern Ocean. You need a boat that goes down wind. I also suggest you make it possible to rig two headsails on poles, so you don't have to use your main. I would also suggest you read Jessica Watsons book. Her boat was a S&S 34. That's as small as you want to go. 36 to 40ft is probably the optimum size.
