Shrouds

Good day all,

My question is this... I recently discover that one of my chainplates is leaking and resulted in the supporting bulkhead to develop wet rot. The plan is to do this myself by need any advice on how to tackle the task. I do have a number of questions though:

1. If I remove the shroud, on the port side, does it have to be secured?
2. If it needs to be secured, can someone suggest how as my vessel toes not have an aluminium toe rail with side holes.
3. What would be the best method to treat the rot, as removed and cleaned the whole area. I was thinking of epoxy and glass first and fill with thickened epoxy once glass has hardened.

Any views and thoughts will be most welcomed.

Kind regard,

N

Probably not. Lower shroud? Do you have dual shrouds? If an upper use a halyard
2. If it needs to be secured, can someone suggest how as my vessel toes not have an aluminium toe rail with side holes. Use a midship cleat, or a hawse hole, or two places making a bridle. Use with a halyard.

There is little stress on your rig at the dock, just dont go sailing in the meantime!

Re: Shrouds

She is a 1980 Trident Challenger. With regards to the shrouds, it’s an upper shroud. I have remove a bit of the rot, but haven’t taken any recent photos.

Let me know your thoughts please and thanks for responding.

Re: Shrouds

I can't really tell what I'm looking at, but the ss plate is the chainplate backing plate for the plate in question? That seems far away from the rot. maybe the rot is just cosmetic? The pics showing the plate are looking up under the deck? Cut the rot or replace the teak ply panels as necessary?

Re: Shrouds

Looks like the rot is only in cabinetry to me, right?

Re: Shrouds

Is the chain plate bolted to the hull?

I’m not quite sure what I’m looking at here

To be honest with you, no it extends underneath the plate however on the plate is extremely secure on the side the where the bolts are. Without loosen the whole plate , can’t just glass around it? And use thickened epoxy to fill the rotted ply once it’s all dry.

If the plate is bolted to rotten ply, you’ll need to pull the plate and scarf in new wood. Glassing around the plate doesn’t do anything to support the plate.
