Shock Santana

I'm browsing the sales listings on the various sites and I keep seeing these.

I understand that the wet Wednesday racers like them, but would they make a good weekender for 1 or 2?

I'm not looking for amenities. Heck, I'm not actually looking to buy at this point. What I'm doing is looking and refining what I may eventually buy. Some day. Down the road. Years from now. Maybe.

What I want to know are things like headroom - comparable to others in the same size or lower because it's a race boat? Overly flexible hull because reduced boat weight means faster? Anything special about the rigging other than it's probably extra tall?

Stuff like that.

Re: Shock Santana

Huh.

Apparently I'm going to have to go down to the marina and start annoying people by asking them about their boats.

I'm only afraid that if I do, them grouchy old codgers are probably never going to stop talking and handing me my own beer.

Re: Shock Santana

We owned and raced a Shock 35 for years, great racing, cruising and sailing boat. The contemporaries of the day were the C&C 41, J 35, Express 37 and Thomas 35, all rated 72 PHRF. The fastest of the group were the J and the Schock. The J was a better boat in a breeze and reaching, the Schock was better in light to moderate winds up and down.

We raced with a crew of 8~10 but occasionally raced double handed. My wife and I also cruised it for up to two weeks. It was a simple boat with few comforts but it was a very easy and very fun boat to sail. I'm 6'5" and the head room was fine. Construction was simple but fairly robust.
