Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Looking at the possibility of shipping my boat to San Francisco from La Paz. Am looking for accounts from people who have done this before and what company they used, cost, experience, etc. I got one quote so far for $10k.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Have you driven Hwy 1 from La Paz to San Diego...?
You would have less wear and tear and it would be cheaper to hire a delivery captain to make the trip by sea.

Thanks for the reply. I should have said that I am looking to transport by sea.

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Thanks for the pointer Steady Hand.
The best I have found so far is a ship that can take my boat from La Paz to Victoria in the Nov-Dec time frame. Then I would have to make the ~750nm sail to San Fran some time after that.

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
There is no shipping company that picks up in La Paz and stops anywhere on the west coast besides Victoria, Canada.
So your option would be to hire a delivery captain and there are quite a few of those that make that pretty standard delivery run.

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
There is a strong possibility/rumor that one shipping company is going to forego an east coast pickup in order to do a west coast delivery from La Paz to SF this spring. Tom Brown at Cruisers Supply in La Paz is in contact with them. La Paz Cruisers Supply — Big Left Turn

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Howdy,
Just curious, is your boat in shape to motor up the coast? What time of year are you trying to have it moved? If you haven't already, you might consider hiring a delivery skipper to bring the boat up for you under its own power. Apparently Nov-January is not a bad time to head up the Baja, and I've heard it's less of a bash than if it were done in May.
Of course you'd have greater wear and tear on the boat than if you find a way to ship it, so your chosen path will depend on your preference.
Good luck!

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Jeff,
The boat/engine is in fine shape to make the trip. Yes, I would prefer to save the engine hours and wear and tear on the boat.
I am looking for the first opportunity to bring it up but am somewhat flexible on the date.

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
You could save a lot of money using a known delivery captain. I cannot see why the life of a well maintained diesel would be impacted. As for wear on the hull, your risks of damage are greater in the loading and unloading process then on any coastal cruise.

Re: Shipping Boat from La Paz to San Francisco
Mmmm, berferd,
It does not seem like a good deal to ship the boat to Victoria, and then have to sail, at this time of year (have you seen the threads about the storm they're expecting in the PNW?) 750 mi to SF. The trip from La Paz to SF is on the order of 1700 n. mi., less actually, though if you sailed it rather than motoring (the Baja bash), it could run more, with tacking. So, $10k or so, to save 1000 mi? plus the hazards of the southbound trip?
Your choice, but if it were me, I'd start looking into delivery captains. I would not expect $10 k worth of repairs, if the skipper is good, and the boat currently in good condition.
Ann
