Cool Shipping a Sailboat to Europe - Advice?

Would be interested to hear any first hand advice from sailboat owners re: shipping a sailboat to Europe. Have been searching the net for various companies that do this service but not interested in paying 1/3 of my boat purchase price for the service !

If you have any advice on specific companies that will ship a sailboat from New England to anywhere in Europe, would love to hear it.

Many thanks in advance...

Bottom line: this is an expensive idea.

Probably less expensive to hire a captain and crew and have it sailed across on her own bottom. A 47 ft cutter should have no problems with that trip.....IMHO

You have four basic options:
  • Have the boat shipped on a ship. This means you get the boat (ususally by flatbed) to a major marine terminal. It is then loaded on the ship. Obviously this is an over simplification as there are regulations on how it has to be shipped.
  • Hire a delivery captain
  • Fly over and transatlantic it yourself
  • Scrap the idea
Incidentally, you can not ship from the US to the US unless the company is a US company. This is due to the Jones Act which prohibits non US based companies from transporting within the United States.

I found Complete Freight, Ltd to be helpful. But you already noted, this will be quite expensive. If cost is a concern, you are really looking at the last two ideas, possible the bottom three depending on the delivery captain.

Should you wish it, here are the tele. & fax numbers

Tel: 0044 (0)1489 575763
Fax: 0044 (0)8704 580438

Hope that helps

Keep in mind, however, that having a boat delivered or sailing it yourself is an expensive proposition as well. In addition to the crew costs and reasonable outfitting expenses there's the wear and tear on the vessel. A good delivery crew may deliver the boat in better order than they found it - very likely will in fact - but there's no denying the hundreds of hours put on sails/rigging/engine and various other systems.

You need to keep these costs in mind when comparing the shipping cost. (also keep in mind that shipping will put wear and tear on some portions of the boat as well, depending on how it's prepared.)
