Shannon 38

Greetings
I have a 1980 Shannon 38. The boat has been hauled. There are two questions I have, 1. There is a two inch gap between the top of the rudder and the bottom of the hull running the full width of the rudder. Is this normal?. I worry about a crab pot float getting lodged there. If anyone has a 38 out of the water, how about some measurements of the rudder. 2. On the port side two feet up from the start of the cutaway forefoot, there is a spot that is leaking desiel fuel. I have be told this is not possible. Told it is a fiberglass patch job gone bad. I sanded the spot dry, found a small crack in the glass, came back the next day and the wet spot had reappeared. The fuel tank was replaced in 2004, prior to my getting the boat. I fixed the glass crack, barrier coated and painted her bottom. Still when I run water over that spot, you see a obvious sheen in a inverted V from where I fixed the crack. I have checked the hull for any delamination all around the spot and can't find any, anywhere. No blisters or any other imperfections. Any clue? obxmedic!

A 2" gap between top of rudder and hull wouldn't be generally abnormal. I can't say what exact dimension your boat "should" have.

The 2" doesn't sound abnormal, think thats about what my Shannon 37 has. As to the crack and "leaking' diesel, recommend you call Shannon and ask Bill Ramos for his opinion..... (401) 253-2441. Good luck.

My Shannon 38 has about a 2" gap. Unless you are going backward, crab pots should not be a problem.

Spent two days at Shannon last week. Shannon and Bill Ramos are a class act.

Sounds like you have a fuel leak from somewhere. May not be the tank. Start the engine and carefully check all the fuel hoses and pipes for leaks before you pull the tank. Pump the bilge and engine sump completely dry before beginning your search.
