SailingYacht ''Mary Deare!'' WHAT HAPPENED?

I was the lucky owner of the british sailing-yacht: ''Mary Deare'',
in 1987-1988! After I sold her to a Schweiz man,it was brought to Italy.

Mary Deare was designed by Robert Clark and sistership to Gipsy Moth.

The first owner in 1959, was the author Hammond Innes, who whote a book about his sailing with Mary Deare: ''Sea and Islands''.

Mary Deare is 43 fod steel-construction, built in Zaandam, Holland
motored to England, where it was finished inside in teak!

After I sold The Mary Deare, I do not know, what happened.

I am very curious about what happened after my ownership,
and where Mary Deare is today?

I hope there are someone in our forum,
who knows or has heard about Mary Deare?

With sailing greetings
Troels

Can't help you in your search, but I'm trying to remember... did not Mr Innes buy that boat with the proceeds from his book "The wreck of the Mary Deare"? I always thought that was kinda classy!

And his books that involve sailing scenes are so wonderfully accurate in usage... a real change from the usual clangers that populate sailing fiction. Always good reads!

Hope that someone can locate her for you.

A steel boat built in 1959 with a teak interior? Maybe the teak is buoyant enough to keep the rust from sinking.

Not exactly helpful to the OP...
FWIW, there is many steel boats way older than this sailing the oceans.

To the OP, hope you find "your" previous boat; it sounds like you have fond memories of it. Sorry I can't help directly.

Hi Jim, I remember a movie "The Wreck of the Mary Deare" starring Alan Ladd and I think Charlton Heston. I loved the movie as a youngster and was lucky to catch it a few months ago on Turner Classic Movies. I didn't know it was also a novel. I'll have to get a copy.

Alan Ladd? Perhaps you are thinking of Gary Cooper and Charlton Heston?

Hi Jim, Right you are. Gary Cooper it was. Great movie for it's time. Loved the E/R scenes of stoking the furnace. Love ships and seeing them in movies stirs something in my soul.

While there may be information out there, smaller steel boats do tend to depart sooner, and as with most boats, they are inclined to simply quietly fade away when their day is done.

To the OP, please provide a few more clues or leads -even very minor ones- if you have any, there is a lot of information in this forum, but sometimes it takes the trivial bits to bring it out.

Re: SailingYacht ''Mary Deare!'' WHAT HAPPENED?

I have to say that I am unable to answer troels Question.

I knew about the Book and the movie; Because During the Pacific Sail Training Association's Historical research into the Armed British Brig 'MARY DARE' Built at Bridport, Dorset. in 1842 and used on the Pacific Northwest Coast 1847 to 1951. By the Hudson's Bay Company.

With totally annoying frequency, We kept coming across people who had heard the story of the Mary Deare. and thought that it was something to do with us?

I have to say I am quite surprised to learn to-day that an actual vessel subsequently was built and existed.
