See if you can find a nice Ontario 32. Designed by C&C and built by Ontario Yachts these are wonderful boats that can be sailed offshore as well as locally. You'd be hard pressed to find a better built 32 for what you might pay for one of these boats.

Might check out the Morgan 34. Good sailing boat built before the bean counters took the fiberglass out of the boats, and meets your price limit. A boat I wouldn't hesitate to take anywhere unlike most of the current budget boats. Currently one with a diesel listed in Yachtworld in your neighborhood for $19,000. The budget part is tough, but with luck and shopping, particularly this time of year you might find a Nor'sea 27, and consider a trailer to save dock fees and allow a bit more for the vessel. Most have a center cockpit, and a pass through via a pipe berth has been seen. Take a look and see if you find anything nearby to take a look-see. There is also a semi-active form on yahoo, and definitely a lot of info on the web. What I am less sure about is if a vee-berth is a part of the plan, or if they are simply two cabins, main and aft, plus the head in the main cabin.
