sailboat purchase formal consultancy

thinking about a very experienced sailor/ boat owner/ skipper to help us formally find a boat that fits our need and budget.

We were looking to buy a boat now in the caribeann ( or somewhere else), improving skills for a year and then traveling around the globe in a family of 4.

Interested please send me private message

The famous Bob Perry (boat designer extraordinar) offered this kind of service. I believe he still does. You can find him hanging out at SailNet, but a Google search should turn him up.

I was going to suggest speaking with Bob as well. The fee is pretty minimal, and there aren't many people in the world with more knowledge about boats.

John Neal does this. I've no idea how much he charges but I have seen a very good review from someone who used him to find a cruising boat.
Definitely worth a call.

What is his fee for a boat selection or boat search consultation for a boat purchase?

Anyone know?
_________

Also, I have seen John Neal mentioned on CF before (as a boat search consultant).

Does anyone know how much it costs to have him consult on a boat purchase or selection?

The base fee is $500 which gets you a year of email support and phone calls. But I would email him for the details.

sailboat purchase formal consultancy

I got a similar prospect/requirement in the grenadines. Boat needs a few things, the least of which is tracking down the title holder (possibly from/in France) so that an offer can be submitted. Mean while the vessel sits on the hard accumulating fees and yard rash. I've been watching this vessel from afar for years and give up after returning to it periodically due to the value.

If anyone knows of a knowledgable consultant in this area who can put the pieces together, please drop me a private message.

Thanks

I just double checked for the first time in four months and it's gone.

About the same amt as a broker charges. About 10% on smaller items then less than 5% above 1 mio boat.

Basically such people avoid working for less than say 10k a stunt. Hence in most cases such consultancy applies to boats 250k and above. I believe major part of the fare are boats 500k and above though.

b.

The gang on Totem provide consulting services in addition to sailmaking. Behan has written the book on sailing with children. "Voyaging with Kids", Books for Cruisers | Sailing Totem

They are also in the Caribbean at the moment. They might be a good resource for you.

Enjoy -

We used Zimmerman Marine for their Yacht Purchase Support Program. They get paid as the buyer's broker. We worked with Haywood May.

Re: sailboat purchase formal consultancy

Does the fee for using a "consultancy" include a survey? Since it seems improbable, one might be paying a lot for just adding a few sources of information available to the consultant to the multitude on online sources that are available to all. Is this service (a consultant) different than hiring a broker to be the agent for yourself as the buyer?

Our survey was additional and paid directly to the surveyor. We used Mike Priviti.

Re: sailboat purchase formal consultancy

Consultants and brokers are grossly different jobs. A broker is trying to sell you a boat, a consultant should be trying to help you select the right boat for what you want to do. The consultants job I said to look at your SOR (statement of requirements) then help you whittle down the thousands and thousands of boats designed to just a handful that you should go try to buy.

Good brokers may do a little of the consultants work, butit really isn't their job.

That's how I see it too. We think alike again.

I also think a true consultant would have no incentive to pitch a more expensive boat, in order to get some kind of commission, or kickback from the seller or broker or builder.
