Theres a 58 for sale opposite where I am at the moment.
Have to say, I was pretty unimpressed given its 2ft shorter length and $1.4 million extra price tag over my recent purchase.

I think the Krogen 42 would be the perfect boat for this family but you're going to be over budget. $175 K might get this one.

With the $100,000 budget I would definitely go with the sailboat. You will get a much more seaworthy craft for the money.

This is a strange one. Why the hell do people put bunkbeds in a yacht of this type is beyond me. Is that Steering Class??? They just crammed the cabins into the thing.

I don't like all Nordhavns.

We set off from San Francisco in our trawler in December 2012, and are now 13,000 miles later in Grenada in the Caribbean. We decided on a trawler right off the bat for several reasons. We loved the space and light that a trawler provides, we wanted to be inside and protected when conditions were bad, and as we had no sailing experience we were not prepared to start our journey as novices.

Not all boats described as "trawlers" are equivalent. In our opinion what you should look for is a boat with a full-displacement hull, low-power engines and a speed at wide-open throttle of no more than 11 knots (i.e. a passage maker). These are boats that are designed for long-distance, open water, cruising, and are the most economical on fuel.

We have a Seahorse 52, twin-engined trawler that is extremely capable of open-water cruising. You need to think carefully about the boat you will choose. We carry 800 gallons of diesel and at 7 knots get 2 to 3 nautical miles per gallon. This gives us a range of 1500-2000 nm. We also have a generator (essential), a water maker (essential), a full polishing system (highly desirable) and a stabilizer (highly desirable). We also have a washing machine and would regard that as almost de rigeur for long-term cruising.

We wanted twin engines rather than a single for redundancy in case one is lost for any reason. On two occasions we have temporarily had to shut down one engine and being able to carry on with the other justified our decision.

I'm sorry but that response is too vague seeing as how Lord Nelson made both a great sailboat & one of my absolute favorite trawlers. Actually just kidding, I'm sure you mean the sail boat but the Victory Tug is a boat that could be in your price range & is quite capable. Another of my favorites not previously mentioned is the Pilgrim.

The victory tugs are nice but are not well designed for a couple + 1 person sleeping arrangement. There is only a forward sleeping quarter. 260 Gallons fuel is small

One of my favorite compact trawlers is the Willard Vega 36 Pilothouse. But I think only 8 were made but if you could find one it should fall in the price range.

There is a 2001 Seahorse Diesel Duck 44" for sale at Boats.com. While it is above your budget at $135,000 it is a true trawler, it is steel construction,has large fuel tanks, two staterooms and is bulletproof. Unless there are serious problems it is a real bargain.
