Sailboat Delivery Costs

I am thinking about purchasing a 50 foot sailboat located in Barcelona, Spain. I am wondering how much it will cost to pay someone to sail the boat across the ocean to Annapolis, Maryland. Does anyone know an approximate cost for this type of delivery? Provisions, Fuel, Return airline ticket? Does your boat broker handle this? Any ideas, help, or suggestions would be quite welcome. Thanks

Re: Sailboat Delivery Costs

Several delivery skippers on the forum. Try sending a message to boatman61.

I think, if I recall previous threads that you would expect to pay by the day, $150-$250 per day plus crew, again I think. Never paid a captain so not certain.

Then yes you have to pay airline tickets, food, boat expenses (fuel, dockage, parts, repairs, etc).

Expect the whole thing to set you back several thousand.

Unless I knew and trusted the broker well I would select my own delivery crew.

Do you plan on going on the trip or just paying for the boat to show up in the states?

I was not planning on going with the delivery crew. That is a lot more than I expected. good information to know. thanks. I am wondering if you can add the price of delivery to the boat loan to cover that type of expense?

Re: Sailboat Delivery Costs

Not sure (about the loan). You might be able to work something out with the owner or broker.

Professional captains on this side of the pond (mid-Atlantic) get $300-400 per day. For a long delivery, they might charge a bit less per day. But, the prices you were quoted are low, IMHO.

A delivery by ship for a 50-footer will cost upwards of $10,000 or more.

I'd figure at least $15,000 for the delivery to Annapolis, all in. And, skipmac is right: be very careful when selecting a delivery crew.

FWIW,

Bill

Re: Sailboat Delivery Costs

You also have to factor in the cost of making her ready for an ocean trip..... (not unknown for a delivery skipper and crew to arrive and decide not to commit suicide on your pride & joy)......that cost somewhere between zero and infinity. Lol. (If doing that by telephone will be nearer infinity).

Lol even at min wage per hour is closer to 200 per day and he is a captain why would you think it would be less. Extravagant items aren't cheap.

Re: Sailboat Delivery Costs

Think a delivery skipper is expensive? I don't.

Here is my view:

That $240 a day is only $10 per hour. That is for an experienced pro to be totally responsible for the safe conduct of a very expensive and complex item during a potentially hazardous long distance move in a sometimes hostile and challenging environment.

Many people routinely pay others more per hour to have their cars washed, their grass cut, their kitchens cleaned, their laundry done, their hair cut, their fingernails polished, their dogs walked, their gutters cleaned, their golf swing coached, or their back rubbed.

Consider the risks involved if those other pros make a mistake. Bad haircuts aside, most don't cause great problems. Compare that to the potential loss if a skipper makes a big mistake.

As I see it, hiring a good, experienced professional delivery skipper is not as expensive as the alternatives, and less of a financial risk than hiring a "cheap" delivery skipper who does not know what they are doing.

Re: Sailboat Delivery Costs

You will also need to get your insurance company to sign off on the delivery skipper.

I would ship it. Cost around the same with less risks and no wear and tear.
