Roberts Offshore 38 Asymmetric

Hello fellow Roberts owners. Anyone got an asymmetric for your Offshore 38 with one mast? I'm ordering an asymmetric for my Offshore 38 which I am yet to collect. I want the sail for the trip home from Sydney to Tasmania (and thereafter). If someone has an asymetric and knows the luff length that would be a great help.

uvmango/ Craig Tate.

Re: Roberts Offshore 38 Asymmetric

Rule of thumb we used to use on 12ft skiffs was mast tip to end of prod (bowsprit) + 6%.

These measurements allowed us to reach fairly close and hard so it might be worth adding some more % to allow better running performance, unless your Roberts planes.

SabreKai here owns a Roberts 38 offshore here in Toronto. He may be able to advise, although I don't think he's focusing on the sail plan at the moment.

Re: Roberts Offshore 38 Asymmetric

GDay,
I am not a Roberts owner but I did get a Gennaker made by Doyle sails recently. The sailmaker came to the boat and measured the mast height, forestay length and distance from bow fitting to mast . If you send off those measurements the sailmaker should get it right.......Cheers

Re: Roberts Offshore 38 Asymmetric

I have an Offshore 38 and had an asymmetric made in Tasmania by Craig Fox of ISS phone 03 62291838. Had mine made to suit an inboard tack so the luff length would be less than at the end of a anchor fitting or bowsprit. Best to think about what you want the sail for which will determine weight and shape, where you want the tack to be, and then measure it up in situ. Even doing that I had to go back and lengthen the sock. It sounds as if you are using an offshore sail maker. I haven't because I reckon it could be like getting a suit tailored by giving directions over the phone.
