If I drill the hole, the thickness would become 0.19 on the eye. Roughly going from 1/4 to 1/5 inch thick.
Sooo... in rough terms, the crossection of the eye if you drill, (.25-.032) x .375 (thickness of eye per Hayn) on each side of the hole.
That's .218 x .375 = .082 sq in on each side of the pin.
That = .164 crossection total.

If the SS is 36 kpsi yield strength the drilled eye IN THEORY would be good for about 5886 lbs of force before deforming.

a 7/32, 1 x 19 wire is rated at about 5350 lb.
So in theory if you drill a clean hole without stress risers/gouges. You are good to go.

Someone check my math.

BUT YOU CAN BUY A CORRECT TOGGLE TO ADAPT!

Re: Rigging mismatch

Hi Cheechako, thanks a lot for your calculations!

How many pounds of pressure is it when you are in 30 knots of wind at whatever point of sail that is hardest on the forestay? Would that be a close haul or down wind?

thanks for the link to that toggle, by the way. I hadn't thought to swap out the toggle itself

Yeah that toggle solves all your issues properly. Well worth the $20 or whatever it is.
Upwind would be the most force probably.

Calculation assumes square outer edges.

Re: Rigging mismatch

The mast head toggle does not look very good. Should be polished and inspected for crevice corrosion or find a new one.

Re: Rigging mismatch

I felt as if reaming the eye would not be that hard, so I did it. Here's the result:

For what its worth. I'm only planning on sailing this for 2 seasons or so, pretty light sailing on the Mississippi. Then, I'll slide down the muddy slide to the gulf. At that point, replace all rigging at once. So this is kinda temporary fix.
