Be very wary of using land-based construction materials in a marine environment...

It IS great, isn't it? I recommend it all the time.

I've read his article about repacking stuffing boxes three times...

Re: Refitting deck hardware - sealing?

I endorse LittleWing77’s advice: be very wary of using land based construction sealants.
SIKAFLEX 291i is formulated for marine use and would be my sealant of choice.
It is the preferred sealant during boat construction and boat builders know a good thing when they see it!
I’ve used it on my boat and it’s excellent,
I have no connection with the manufacturers or distributors - just an enthusiastic user...

Re: Refitting deck hardware - sealing?

I found butyl a bit too difficult to work with over large surface areas such as deck organizers. I've recently had reason to pull all the deck fittings, many of which I'd rebedded a few years back with 3M 4000. I really, really like this stuff. You squeeze it out, tighten the through bolts tightly (one time) and make a nice clean-up line from the squeeze out. It makes a great waterproof seal. It was a bit hard to get it to release, but it didn't cause any damage. Heat works, too.
