Don't use foam as it will retain rainwater from the top down and the mast will become an upsidedown pendulum when your boat is in rolly conditions.

My use of the term "pool noodle" was meant to be suggestive rather than definitive. There are many foam products that will not absorb water and which could be applied in long "staves" cable-tied as the loom of wires is sent up the mast.

The idea is that foam/cable-ties are light, will stay light (if it's not a sponge-like foam!) and is cheap and will stop the problem. Even those split-loom cable covers used down below will tap inside a moving mast, because they are hard plastic, if flexible.

Actually, upon reflection, maybe I did mean "pool noodle", as that particular type of extruded foam retains its flotation and does not seem to absorb water, given its weight when removed from, say, a pool...
