Quiet Water Pump
Does anyone know of a water pump for fresh water that does not sound like a truck rumbling through the deck?

Re: Quiet Water Pump
Headhunter makes very quiet pumps but they are equally pricey$$$

Re: Quiet Water Pump
There's more to it. How/where a pump is mounted has only everything to do with noise transmission.

Re: Quiet Water Pump
I don't know if you have an expansion vessel in your domestic water circuit but it can greatly reduce the frequency of the the pump going on. (For proper functioning it needs to be periodically checked and recharged with air as needed.)

Re: Quiet Water Pump
I like to be able to hear the pump. Helps to monitor water consumption and leaks.

Re: Quiet Water Pump
I found the variable speed sensor pumps to be reasonably quiet especially when you just need a dribble or two, ( teeth washing at night etc. Also as they are vane pumps, they dont have the pulsing of diaphragm pumps. I converted the last two boats to VSD pumps. The current one is still diaphragm as the PO just fitted it before I bought it.

Re: Quiet Water Pump
Mounting can help/hurt pump noise, but there is definitely a large range of loudness to different pumps (we have been through many different types).
Right now, the quietest and most reliable pump we have found is a Remco Aquajet VSD pump. These aren't sold into the marine market for some reason, but they are very popular with the RV/caravan market. Fortunately, they are also priced like they are not "marine".
Here is ours: Remco 55AQUAJET-ARV Aquajet RV Variable Speed Water Pump

I've lost the contents of my fresh water tank twice due to taps being inadvertently jarred (or snagged) under way -- when everyone was on deck and couldn't hear the water pump. Although both times were in coastal situations, both were big PITAs. I now even switch off the fresh water pump offshore.

I was on a boat that had a knacky little timed alarm that sounded if the water pump ran for too long

Agree 100%. I want to hear the pump go on especially during the night when nobody's using the water. Has identified leaks more than once and a faucet that's been left dripping.

A damned good idea. Was it home-made? I guess it wouldn't take too much electronics wizardry to hack something up.
I guess you'd just need one of these:

Energizing the pump energizes the timer, with the alarm buzzer connected to the relay output, and Bob's your uncle.

Re: Quiet Water Pump
We have had very good success with Flojet pumps. One supplies fresh water and another low flow one is used for fridge cooling. Both are very quiet but as previously pointed out it depends on how and where they are mounted. They are supplied with rubber mount bushing that dampen much of the noise.

Re: Quiet Water Pump
This is what I did in my RV to quiet my pump.. It works well, but you will still get some noise from the lines touching the hull (or RV parts) in various places. It will reduce the noise well below 1/2.
In used industrial strength spray adhesive to attach the foam to the ply.
