Check other recent threads - somebody was asking how to get rid of old rusty chain - maybe you could make a deal ...

Re: Purchase Lead weights where? options?

To counter balance for the addition of a generator that sits well to starboard from the center line of the boat I bought lead shot (for shotgun shell reloading). It comes in cloth bags and we made bags out of heavy vinyl, put the cloth bags inside them and and sewed them shut. About 35 pounds per bag and we carry 7.

Depending on where you are located you might be able to get lead at a scrap yard less than half price of anywhere else.

I got some at about 20 cents on the dollar for a keel mod years ago.

Re: Purchase Lead weights where? options?

My auto mechanic collected a 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights very quickly at my request. I melted these into ingots.

I used to buy lead products from Lead Enterprises in Miami. They sell ingots for ballast.

I once found large bricks made of spent lead bullets encased in resin in a Capri, they even had Frank Butler's business card as a label, must have been made at the factory. An indoor pistol range must shovel them out by the wheelbarrow.

Call a local elevator shop.

My son is an elevator mechanic...... I had him get me old counter weights from one of his jobs...... 3 nice slabs of steel about 3” * 10” * 3’. Very heavy..... I am going to cut them into smaller pieces and glass them in to level my boat once generator goes back in.

Sacks of dry washed sand Available at big box stores inside heavy bag of old sail cloth inside a burlap sack to avoid chafe . About 60# a shot very cheap and no point loads on the hull . Build a loose ply wood corral so they get air but cannot move . Works well and removable . Mike Pope

Re: Purchase Lead weights where? options?

I used lead shot in bags. Once I achieve the balance I wanted, mixed with resin and made it permanent to avoid shifting and encapsulated to keep the lead from leaching.

pwilletts...
I still have about 2000 pounds of lead keel left, could be cut into whatever shape you need but you need to be within driving distance, I sold quite a bit to people wanting to cast their own bullets, usually in 40-50 lb chunks.
