Re: Pulled the trigger...dreaming is over, time to get to work!

Mine was underpowered (old school yanmar 30 hp) I wouldnt want less than about 50 hp in that boat. A Perkins 4-108 might be just right. Not sure what engines they came with what years. The boat wallows badly in wind waves when trying to go to windward and /or against the chop, comes to a stop, gets going again, comes to a stop etc. Does this motorsailing to try to improve also.
Sailing to weather, you will be lucky to tack through 120 degrees. This improves a bit if it's really blowing.
Watch for the condition of the tanks, as they are under all the furniture and not removeable without tearing the boat apart. Nicely crafted boat though.
For me personally I would prefer a Cape Dory, Alberg or Island Packet etc as they sail pretty well comparatively. But realistically, you learn to sail what you have and they are a beauty to behold!
Mine had the Pullman berth layout and I disliked it a lot.

WOW! Great choice, I hope you have friends who will give you free labor and advice. I can still remember when I bought my first boat; I still feel that little "flutter" when I recall sitting below with the owner as I made out the check!
I couldn't wait for him to get off my boat.

well...free-advice friends i hope to find here! free-labor friends???...non-existant. suffice to say, i've been watching a lot of single-handed maintenance videos!

family???...don't much approve of the sail away plans. most of them are of a mind that if a boat ain't on the water catching bass, crappie, or catfish...well, that ain't much of a boat!

That's OK, when you get one of these send them a pic! Tell them you wish they were real fishermen.

Re: Pulled the trigger...dreaming is over, time to get to work!

Congrats! As a 43t owner, you will have years of fun and a little bit of work ahead of you. The HC's are known to be a 40%labor and 60%love but I can honestly say that when I walk the dock and pass by all the newer style boats, there is no boat I would rather have.

We love our HC and was probably one of the best decision we ever made. Some notes you will quickly find out. She is a little slower than most in lighter winds. A good idea to pickup a oversized Genoa or even better cruising asym.. Get a sock or furler as it will make life very easy to deploy. She really comes into her own with anything above 15 knots and 20 knots you could not ask for a better boat. With the sails balanced, she will drive on a rail in some of the nastiest conditions.

Keeping the teak on the deck and bulwark clean and looking good will always be a labor of love. Make sure you take a few buckets of saltwater on a monthly basis and coat the decks. Use a soft mop or very soft brush to scrub the teak. Again, all you need is a little saltwater and the teak will look good.

Lastly, if you have not already, join hanschristian.org. There is a huge body of knowledge pertaining to your boat 38t and lots of owners with years of experience to answer any questions you may have. If you have a particular problem, this is the place to ask.

Congrats again!

Re: Pulled the trigger...dreaming is over, time to get to work!

Congrats, Salty...

I'm still in the "why can't I find the right bloody boat" category! I have the money in the bank from my last boat and house sale, I am self-employed when I need to be and retired for the rest of the time (retired early); and I am ready to get stuck into the boaty lifestyle. But can I find the right boat - can I hell as like! The only one that came close was pulled from under my nose by an earlier offer after I'd already arranged to view it and bought flight tickets!! Bastard!!

Anyhow, enjoy your boat and the freedom and happiness it will bring. I'll get there too, one of these days...
