My understanding is that rewiring European boats for American waters is not cheap. You may also need to replace all of your AC equipment if you have any.

"...adjust your engine alternator...for American input." ????
That makes no sense at all.
As for the rest the simple solution is to install an isolation transformer such as the Victron which will accept any worldwide voltage and output 120 volts -or 240 volts if desired. The bonus is there will be no physical connection to shore power so eliminates corrosion issues from other boats as well.

Re: Prospective boat lacks a few systems
I know of one boat with euro wiring that tried a step up transformer to change 120 vac to 240 vac. The intent was to save possible wiring changes. The end result was that the transformer created more problems than it was worth. Before rewiring, however, check the gauge of the wires on the boat now. Euro standards may have required minimum wire sizes that would be still be adequate with the voltage/amperage change to 120 volts.

Just the generator can set you back over 10K.

Love it! Good catch..

Re: Prospective boat lacks a few systems
Well, details details but I think some of the numbers answered are close. The biggest discrepancy will be self install or pro install? For self install:
Water Maker = $5k
Generator =$8k
Air conditioning Why? for at the dock or for anytime?
dingy =$5k for a decent one and motor. Less used of course.
Freezer= $2500 WAG

Jim,
I'll share our experiences on our Nauticat 52 even though the critics/trolls will, in all probability, give me a hard time...
Spectra 16gph Watermaker - $12k installed, including haul-out;
Northern Lights Generator - $15k self-installed/direct replacement;
Flagship Marine Air-Conditioning - $20k installed, 3 units in three cabins. Very tricky installation. I would definitely choose different units if doing it again.
Mercury Ocean Runner w/Yamaha T9.9 - $6k
Adler Barbour Plate Freezer - $4k including new holding plate and condenser unit.
All the work was performed on the West coast (Seattle/San Diego). Hope this helps in some way...

Re: Prospective boat lacks a few systems
Hello, A question n your A/C purchase. What was difficult on the installation?
What would you do different?

Thanks for posting that info.
What was the size or output (KW) of the generator?

The installation location of each unit and the ductwork are what made the whole thing a bit tricky.
As large as our boat feels, and as much storage as we have, we found that there were very few places that were suitable for the units. In the end, we had to build/alter some of the cabinetry in order to conceal them. This, of course, had the trickle down effect of making some of the ductwork extremely difficult - mainly due to working in some very tight spaces.
If I were to do it again, I might not...haha! At the very least, I would not purchase Flagship Marine air conditioning. I haven't been happy with them at all. Ironically, when one of them failed in July, we bought a roll-around home unit. It works so well that I haven't even used the recently repaired onboard unit.
Hope this helps a little.

A 5hp ob and a slat floor roll up inflatable dingy will run you a quarter of that.. gets you back and forth just as efficiently and lessens your load on the boat.
Unless of course you like big aluminium ribs and 15hp engines that do 10+ knots.
|
Some people use their dinks for more that short shore trips. A roll up and 5hp would not suit me at all, but I'm glad it works for you.
