Port Townsend to Ilwaco/ Ilwaco to port Townsend

Headed to Port Townsend in the morning to help a friend bring his a Formosa 41 to Ilwaco WA. Then in Ilwaco I will get off and help another friend bring his Cascade 36 to the sound. So the plan is to leave Port Townsend on Wednesday afternoon and head for Neah bay we may or may not stop in Neah bay. We will sail/motor to the mouth of the Columbia river.
Then Saturday we will bring the Cascade north.
That is the plan as long as the weather cooperates.

I will be sanding my boat in Astoria Saturday if you need a ride from Ilwaco to Astoria or Portland give me a shout. Be careful on the entrance to Iwaco

Yep when going into Ilwaco you must follow the channel markers and go slow.

I just made the trip recently. You might want to look at the thread "PNW" in the crew wanted section. It looks like the swells are mostly down, but I would still watch the weather like a hawk.
BTW- save enough fuel to motor the entire Columbia bank if needed. Winds are funky at the entrance.

I have made this trip 20- 25 times. Even so I get a little nervous each time. Weather looks good for each leg of the trip. The Formosa owner is moving the boat to Port Angles this morning. So late afternoon today we will start from there. If need be we will stop in Neah bay to time the Columbia river crossing.
Is your boat still in Astoria?

hi Tim,
I am in Warrenton and already love it there. If the Bank wasn't so dangerous this would be a sailing mecca. But you already know that. Good sailing!

Re: Port Townsend to Ilwaco/ Ilwaco to port Townsend

On Wednesday I drove to Port Angles with two others to where the Formosa 41 was. We left at 5:30 pm and went straight to Astoria. Not much wind on the straits a little bumpy going around cape Flattery. Then a very SMOOTH ride down the ocean. About 15 miles off la-push we stopped to watch a gray whale rolling and slapping his fins on the water. We watched him for close to 20 minutes. Then continued south. North of Grays harbor we heard a MAYDAY call. A 52' Hatteras was on fire. husband, wife and 14 yr old daughter. They were on the bow in survival suits. A commercial fishing boat was very close and rescued them. We could see the smoke. Very scary to hear and see.
We crossed the bar at 1:30 am. The bar was glass smooth. I think this was the smoothest I have ever seen.

Boat burns, sinks off Ocean City after all aboard rescued | The Daily World

Later that morning I got on the Cascade 36 in Astoria. We left around 3 pm. Bouncy rough bar. 10kts out of the NW. First 5 -6 hours were a little rough then the ocean smoothed out. Stopped in Neah bay for fuel then on to Port Angles arrived at 3:30am. Left at 10am and sailed a little and motored to Port Orchard arrived at 9:30 pm.
Back home and looking forward to my hot tub tonight.
Tim
PS Newt if you are looking for extra help when going sailing let me know.

I'm green with envy. How did you get such great conditions? And whales to boot! Ha! I will probably go up to Vancover Island in August. Will see how the weather plays out then.

I posted a video of the Whale. The video will show how flat the ocean was.
