Hello!

I am looking to make my first sailboat purchase either next spring or in the fall at the end of the season.

I am looking for some advice on models here in Canada. I am thinking that I would like to be in the 24-27 ft range in terms of size due to costs, but I would like something I can learn on with my wife, but be able to comfortably spend a weekend or week on the boat. The plan is to use it to not only still, but be able to get away for the weekend and then do a few week long trips as well. My wife is short at 5' and I am about 5'10, so the headroom I would like would be about my height. I am thinking that a sink, head and icebox would be needed as well, and I prefer to have the head not under the v berth. V-birth would be the preferred sleeping area as well.

Any suggestions as to models to look at? So far I am seeing the Grampion 26, the Tanzer 26 or Tanzer 7.5 as possible contenders. Any others you would suggest?

Atom Voyages has a great list of Good Old Boats which range in size from 20 - 32 feet.

A catalina 27 fits the bill. Lots out there at reasonable prices.

C&c 27, are you in Ontario.....lots of choices there, buy now as everyone puts their boats up for the winter and get a deal.

Yes, Ontario. I am looking I think at the end of season next year as I really want to take the time to find the right boat and make sure I have enough $ to get something decent, as well as the money to store it and for the slip .

Good advice here, I would only add that maybe you would be wise to look at older boats as a first purchase. Many from the 70's even the 60's are still in good order (I am in one now).
A year or two experience in use will tell you all you need to know about what you want going on.

Thanks! I am not worried about the age of the boat...I realize how long they can last if well maintained. I am more concerned about finding the right boat for our needs.

Both have "stand up" heads aft. and aren't slugs if sailed properly.

Cape Dory 27/28

Think about the movement of a boat. Normally the bow will be dipping up and down and the worst place to sleep unless you're anchored on Golden Pond. Plan on the V Berth for storage, and sleep in the cabin on the settees. Odds are you wont be able to stretch out in the V berth anyways on small boats. I have a Cape Dory 28 and barely have enough room to lay stretched out in my V berth at 5' 11". When looking at small boats I would view the cabin settees or even the cabin floor as the sleeping area. I take off my settee cushions and put them on the cabin floor if its rolly. Thats the lowest point of the boat and central. It will have the least motion in all directions. The "V" in "V Berth stands for VOMIT.
