Maybe we were lucky, never quoted more for a multi.
I asked the manager of the yard in NC where our cat is hauled why they didn’t charge more for cats. His reply was a whether he hauled a cat or monohull he used the same width travel lift so didn’t make a huge difference to the amount of yard space used.

...i'll add..

from colombia to panama to guatemala/belize/mexico and then usa...
...only a single marina in kemah texas attempted to double charge extra of the width of our catamaran.

We kept our cat in Hitchcock Texas and the t heads were cheaper per foot than standard slips. So our 25’ wide cat had an approximately 110’ long t-head cheaper than a 12’ wide slip.

You Tube channel ( Yacht Ruby Rose) just did the French canal system. Worth watching, beautiful old towns and scenery. No way is a cat doing that trip, but I couldn't either drawing over 6 ft. Makes me want to rent a small powerboat to do the canals one day. Really beautiful French countryside.

Never have paid more for a marina slip or a haulout, for our cat vs a monohull. At marina, they typically put us on a side tie. Have stayed in marinas from Texas thru Bahamas, on two different cats we've owned. At anchor, we've pulled into some very shallow places where monohulls couldnt, and they spent hellish night dealing with swell.

WOW, does my experience differ on the Catamaran slip issue.

I am consistently turned away from marinas, then if they want to take me, they have a huge multihull surcharge. For slips, you end up paying for 2. For yard storage, you have a multiplier based on beam. Hardly any can haul it, even though a pickup truck, boat ramp and a dodgy trailer would work just fine.

But most of all, I get turned away a lot.

Once they hear about the 25' beam they tell me not to come.

It typically takes some effort to find a spot on a dock. Anchoring and moorings are not an issue.

Seems like over here in Finland.

I just checked our main used sailboats marketplace and there are zero cruising cats for sale. I've seen maybe four cats in real life (last twenty years).

Most of our recreational infrastructure is built for monohulls.

Re: Places only a monohull can go?

I can report that every marina we've entered in Australia charges extra for wide beam multi hulls, even on end ties. For regular marina berths (called pens here) a typical cat does not completely occupy the space between fingers, but leaves inadequate room for another boat to come in and use the finger, so to me a surcharge seems reasonable. But for an end tie? Not so much!

The east coast of Oz has a pretty high percentage of multihulls, and spaces are in high demand... a seller's market for sure, so the urge to gouge must be pretty hard to resist.

I suspect that as the number of multis increases in Florida waters and elsewhere in the USA that the surcharge will become common, but that's just a guess by an expat who ain't too familiar with that scene.

Spent around 8 months in Florida...ran the entire coast from the panhandle to Georgia.

Nope, we never paid extra.

What are you sailing? a 25ft beam suggests a boat massively larger than a 40ft monohull.

We had 34ft catamaran but with a 14ft beam so we fit in standard slips.

Yeah, are used to have an older British boat like that also. We didn’t have problems with that boat. Once you get a bit larger or a modern wider been boat, they start charging you like crazy.

There is really something to be said for the narrow beam older British boots. They can fit in monohull slips no problem.

As can modern Geminis although probably pretty hard to find outside the US and not the best for blue water.

Gemini's not the best for Blue water is a fallacy,

I proved mines capability in a violent storm two weeks ago in Bass Straight and coming thru the heads of Westernport Bay in a full out going tide and the violent storm still raging,

I also have large Mono's parked beside me in a normal sized wet berth,

I haven't owned one but I'm generally a fan so I'll admit the blue water comment wasn't from firsthand experience like you've obviously had. I didn't realize any had made it as far as Australia. Out of curiosity did you (or someone) sail it there or was it shipped?
