Pick a boat challenge: 50+ ft, < 25yrs old, <$1mm USD
As the title says. What older, "bullet-proof" mono would you choose? Not looking for bargain hunting ideas. Having to put 6-figures into the boat to update/modernize is fine but please break it down/explain. Purpose would be world-cruiser, sturdy, good movement, good base to upgrade.
Sample idea: late model Swan 55/57. Built like a brick **** house but would need sails, nav gear, etc. Could probably find a good one for $500k but would need a lot of work.
Go!

And how many people onboard? Latitudes being sailed? A slab reefed, older Swan, for instance, would be bomb proof, but a real challenge for a couple.

"What boat do I want to buy?"
Kind of a ridiculous question

Bullet-proof would include an Oyster such as https://oysteryachts.com/sailing-yac...r-sale/asante/ However I am biased by owning an Oyster 49

A pretty new Island Packet.
Bullet proof as they come.
50 feet is, IMHO, being greedy.

Thanks for the aggressive ******* answer. I'm not in the market, this was a question someone asked me that got me thinking. He was debating between new and used and was considering the older boat w/ heavy refit option. Run along and be bitter someplace else.

BearBoater, I appreciate your question. Although you have been a member of this forum for a few years you have not participated much. That and the wording of your question leads me to think you may not have a lot of experience with selecting, buying, maintaining and cruising a large sailboat. The responses of some of the people who posted above are meant to say that it isn’t simple. The choice of a boat is dependent on where and how one sails, with whom and with how many. Some more information about the intended use of the boat would allow people to give you better answers. And, there are many previous threads about boat choices.
