How to sale a boat?
1) Critically review your boat.
2)Make a list of all "squawks".
3)Repair essential "squawks"
4)Detailed listing with multiple good photos. Rate condition BELOW actual condition(i.e. condition 5 on 10 scale)....Underpromise... When prospective buyer arrives and mentally tells himself "I would rate this boat a 7", then you are almost there.
5)Know what the market has listed and especially which boats are "competitors" to yours
6)List at a price that is below all other competitors prices, with reasonable adjustments for variation of equipment.

Serious buyers will know the asking prices for your competitors and you have if listed realistically, will buy at your listed price.

Why? Because I'm watching many boats, and there are many on the market. When (and if) it drops to $399K, then that is when I make my "offer". Offer is the key word. Or, they can just keep it, which they do not want to do.

That aside, has anyone else noticed that Hinckley as basically stopped being a sailboat company? Yes, still available, yet every e-mail they send me advertises their "Sunday lunch" jet boats, and expensive Sunday lunch boats they are. Being from Maine, I'm somewhat sad that they stopped being the great sailboat company that Hank, and I, loved in the past. Oh well. Time moves on.

Fact is most people don't understand marketing. I'm no expert at it either but, whenever I do sell something, I am usually able to get at or near full asking price when I take the time to build the ad with detail and plenty of pics... vs if I just put together a simple ad.

I guess the sellers really aren't interested in fetching full market value for their boat.

The other thing I find funny about sellers is the price their asking. $500K for a 10-15 year old 45' cat. Hahahahaha. Why waste time selling your boat if you're not serious about it? The only reason I took interest in my the purchase of my boat two years ago is because the owner presented the specs, description, and photos correctly AND because the price he was asking was reasonably in market-range for that year and make of boat. I paid him full asking price.

WHY ARE WE SELLING
While we love traveling and sailing, my wife's health requires us to have a single doctor that can follow her condition. There are plenty of available doctors out here, but she needs continuing care that a new doctor each week just can't provide.

So we will be moving back to shore. No, probably not back to Canada. While our kids are there, I'm done with the winters. We will pick a spot in the Caribbean or Central America and buy a house (yuck).

REGISTRATION & TAXES

Sail Quest is Canadian federally registered.

YOU ARE CANADIAN: If you keep it out of Canada there are no taxes on the sale. This is perfectly legal. (there's a $250 registration transfer fee)

YOU ARE AMERICAN: If you keep the it out of US there should not be any taxes, just your Coast Guard registration. But you have to verify this with your local state/federal agencies.

You can also register this boat in any other country which will reduce or eliminate any taxes.

I HAVE KIDS

This was my dream for a long time, but I waited until my kids were older and left home. That was a mistake. I think my kids missed out on an amazing adventure. They would have had such an experience if they had traveled around seeing the world. And home-schooling kids is a lot easier than most people think.

I never though about home-schooling until we moved out of Toronto. We moved to a small rural area where the local school had promised full care for my 4 kids, but then couldn't deliver. After fighting with them for 2 months we decided to invest our energies into our kids instead of fighting the school. We pulled them and home schooled. They were in grades 8, 6, 5, and 2. School work took only an hour or two each day, and at the age of 16 they had finished their high school (with over 80% in EVERY class), and all enrolled at University. To be precise, Becky, our youngest, finished her high school at the age of 14, when her peers would be STARTING high school. They were, in fact, the youngest students to ever enroll at Laurentian University (Sudbury, Ontario). And they all did great, better than those who had gone through the public schools.

You will find many other families with kids aboard. Smart, well-behaved kids. Kids who have seen real poverty on some islands. Kids who are grateful for what they have, and know they need to EARN a living, not have it spoon-fed to them. Kids who are active, outgoing, and fit. Kids who would rather go swimming than play a video game about swimming.

EXPERIENCE

We've had power boats (14' to 24') for years but never sail boats. In fact when I bought this boat my TOTAL sailing experience was a few hours in a 10' skiff one afternoon at Scout Camp with my kids 15 years earlier.

I did a lot of reading (Sailing for Dummies, etc.), and when we bought this we started by motoring. Then we put out the Genoa (the sail on the front) because it's an easy sail to put in and out and an easy one to learn. Then we started using the main as well. Finally after we got to the Bahamas we started using the spinnaker (the big colourful light wind sail).

The boat is easy to learn on and very forgiving.

TRAINING

We could give you a week of training for no cost (no guarantee how often we will get out, that is weather dependent, but we will get out a few times).

My 24 year old son, is available for more after that.

WHAT SKILLS ARE NEEDED

Jack of all trades is perfect.

Basic mechanical skills, plumbing, wiring and electrical knowledge, these things will take you anywhere. If you are good with your hands it will help a lot. And even if you don't know it now, you soon will.

The more you can do on your own, the better you will be.

What if you are all thumbs? Then when things go wrong, you will have to hire someone to fix it. Things will go wrong. You have a very complicated piece of machinery, made as light as possible. But proper maintenance and replacing worn parts before they break will make things easy (and a lot cheaper).

CAN IT BE SAILED SINGLE-HANDED

It can be easily sailed single-handed. All lines are led to the (sheltered) cockpit, where there are two large winches. You should not have to go out on deck to do pretty much anything except drop the anchor (and you can upgrade by putting an anchor control in the cockpit if you wanted too).

IS IT GOOD FOR ISLAND HOPPING?

It's a perfect boat for Caribbean island hoping. And if you ever decide to venture further, the Wildcat is a real offshore boat. We have her fully set up for live-aboard cruising. While most "cruise ready" boats are good for a few days or a week out, this boat can sustain herself endlessly (well, you will need food and fuel).

DOES IT HAVE AC

No, don't need it.

We spent a summer in north Florida on the boat, and we needed AC there. We used a portable window unit. We gave it away once we arrived in the Bahamas.

Here (and through the rest of the Caribbean), there is always a cool breeze. You just don't need AC.

WHAT IS/ISN'T INCLUDED

Everything listed on the "details" page (below) is included, with the exception of Scuba Set 1 and the dive computer from set 2, and the Dungeons & Dragons game.

It comes with all galley gear (pots/pans, dishes, cutlery, cookware), towels, bedding. Just bring your clothes.

I'm not sure of the OP's age, however I was an adult in a time BEFORE the internet. If one thinks that it's an inconvenience to drive around and look at boats after you've narrowed down the field, imagine what we did in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.

Yep, we made phone calls and appointments and drove around and looked at a lot of crap.

Incidentally, the idea of "I'm paying cash", is also a funny sentiment. Cash vs Credit really only matters to the BUYER. The Seller gets CASH regardless of how you pay for it or whether you finance the boat. As the seller I don't care where your cash comes from, or whether you signed a note or made a withdrawal. It's the same to me as a seller.

70's, 80's, 90's and even 00's are gone forever. Regardless of your willingness to realize that. Things are very different now. It's not uncommon to buy boat in another country, on another continent, many thousands miles away. Things are done differently today. And these sellers who quicker will realize these changes and will adapt to them, will have much better results at the end.

You forgot to mention: Clean the boat. I have looked at several boats with oil floating in the bilge or reek of diesel when you open the hatch. And I have wasted my time too driving a hour and half to look at a floating trash can.

Some interesting replies to say the least. To the haters who say the ad doesn't matter and you should be doing your research or way back in the day we used to walk through 3' of snow to look at crappy boats ok then.

Unfortunately we are in the modern day age. Where 90% of the country has access to a +10megapixel camera on there phone which takes pretty decent pics and if you can't even post the basics of what your boat has ( Im not even talking about accessories) gees I sold my boat in Hawaii 3 years ago. It took me all of 15 minutes to list the basics and at least give the pertinent info and do you know why I did this? I wanted to sell my boat ASAP. Just what I want is to get 10 phone calls that ask the same question ( what kind of motor do you have?)

It's a buyers market I'm just saying a lot of sellers are missing the point. it's a buyers market. At least spend the 30 minutes on your freaken boat add.

We all have a camera on our phones we carry everywhere. No excuse to not have recent pictures...unless you have something to hide!

If a seller won't spend a few minutes to list the equipment and post a few pictures, then I figure he also has no time to change the oil, clean the boat, or do regular essential maintenance. And who would want a boat like that? No one!

There is one situation where a "no info" ad is forgivable. Its still a terrible ad, but understandable. Thats when the owner has died and the descendants (who know nothing about the boat) need to sell the boat.

However, too often the one thing the descendants know about the boat is the price it cost when new. So the asking price is totally insane. Unfortunately, those boats need to sit for a couple years before the storage fees knock some sense into the reluctant new owners. And by then the fuel has spoiled, freezing damage has cracked the engine block, and the cushions are moldy.

Ah, but financed deals generally require more time and are more likely to fall thru.

Cash is King...but get a "Proof of Funds" letter before accepting the offer, just to make sure.
