Pearson 365 Engine Access

I'm looking at an '81 sloop that is in really exceptional shape. It was repowered in 2013 with a Beta 37 that is sub-1000 hours. I really like everything about this boat except the engine access, which seems uniquely terrible. I'm a pretty small person, but the access is..... imposing. Anyone who has had one and done routine work, how bad is it really? I have a lot of experience with gas engines in cars, but very little with marine diesels. What is a reasonable expectation of maintenance time per 1000 hours?

Pearson 365 Engine Access

I had a 365 with a big perkins/westerbeke in a vdrive configuration-which I assume is the same on your install.. Access really was not to bad for all routine service and some unplanned service. There may be an access panel under the sink-if not you should add one. It provides good access to the fuel filter, lift pump and alternator. Removing the engine box gives good access to the injectors and high pressure pump for bleeding. The water pump">raw water pump is tedious, but doable via the starboard cockpit locker. The only real bear was changing the oil-dipstick tube was portside and accessed via the sink access panel. I remote mounted my filter making changing oil filters a snap. The pan is so deep I ran a hose off the drain plug in the pan to an easier location with a petcock wired closed between oil changes).
good luck
