Pearson 28-2

We are about to buy our first boat and wanted to get feedback on the Pearson 28-2. A sailing friend says it is too light for cruising in Maine waters. What do you all think? Thanks.

Kind of a blanket statement by your friend and a bit absurd as a generalization. What kind of cruising are you looking to do?

Don't have a Pearson but we sail out of Boston on a Cal 28-2 and she does just fine. The two boats can't be that different...

These Pearson owners cruised Maine and their boats look to have held up well.

I don't know everything about every model of Pearson but they are generally thought to be well built. Have not heard of any particular model that was a lemon.

Of course I have a Pearson and might be prejudiced, but I am in the middle of a total refit and have not found any major structural complaints.

A completely absurd statement(your friend's) by someone with little or no real sailing experience. The Pearson would be a great boat for gunkholing, coastal cruising, and even trips offshore if it is prepared properly for sea. It is fast on its feet, easy to handle and has ample room below. The worse mistake first boat owners make is to buy a boat that is too big and intimidating to handle competently and safely or to buy a heavy sea slug that is not fun to sail unless you have 20 knots of wind. Look for a light to medium displacement boat under 30 feet. Learn to sail and you'll love to sail. Good luck and good sailing, Ron
