I give money to Keep Turning Left. Really high quality production, very interesting videos.
And so yet another good idea dissolves into a pathetic grab for porn. SMH.

I support LaVagabonde monthly/per video. It's not a lot, but they keep me engaged, I get things in the mail from them/their representative(s) and I enjoy it. I'd rather give them a few bucks a month than spend it on a movie in a theater listening to other people text or talk. Besides, their videos haven't dissolved into the type of sensationalism that Delos has. I unsubscribed to those videos.

I like watching some of the other more amateurish ones as well - just those who try to share their passages, foibles and successes. Some are pointless and you click and forget them.

Re: Patreon Income

I agree with most of the statements above, and enjoy La Vagabonde each video.

To the OP's question about trying to use it as a means to offset or as a primary income, well, I know I don't have the time (yet) to develop nearly as finished a product as those already out there. And more importantly, I won't ever put my 100% faith into donated money that can disappear at a moment's notice. It's awesome that people are able to see such support (myself included in the donation pile), but I'd use it as "extra" and never let myself get to where I would fully expect that check every month.

Re: Patreon Income

Everyone has a patreon acct these days. I don't mind the two the OP are talking about because they put great product out there. What gets old is the people who twist arms and beg for "patrons" even though they don't even know how to sail and have nothing to offer the cruising community at all ie Lazy Geckos and Miss Lonestar.

Re: Patreon Income

Keep in mind they have 80k viewers. I follow about 12 cruisers on your tube. You can donate 1 dollar a week. If I did all 12 that's 1 lunch a week and look forward to there videos weekly. Look at the time and effort delos takes to make 1. To keep them interesting there day is thinking about the viewers.
There doing what we want to our will be doing soon.

Ugh I gave up of those two after half a video. Not worth it even if they do take their tops off.

I can't believe you made it through half of their video those two groups try to sale "sex" but both have little kids under foot it's very hard to watch. They can also say the word "patron" or PayPal 40 times in a 15 min video I'm sure that's got to be a record!

Haha I meant I watched half of a single video. But yes, it was pretty awkward with the kids and all.

I don't know about becoming a 'Patreon' but I'm getting a GoPro for my next trip this June.. tired of water killed phones and limited filming times.. try and give you guys a better view than a SPOT crawl across a chart.
See if I can improve on my pathetic attempts to date.. and if my last June Transatlantic is anything to go by there should be a fair bit worth filming.. not me.. the wild life..

Re: Patreon Income

We follow a number of folks and that includes Brian, Brady, Karin and the others that sail on Delos. We enjoy their work as well as Totem and to a much lesser extent LaVagabond. The crew of Delos is highly talented, look at the stop motion and other work, they take the cameras everywhere. Of course they show off their assets and yet, they also cover a lot of other stuff and they boil it down to the general public/dreamer level. It's not a cruiser that is the target audience, it's the general public.

I too have corresponded and even gotten some ideas and advice from the Delos and Totem crews. They have given us some great ideas as our date of departure gets closer. We even have learned from their mistakes or comments.

I agree that hometown and other income help. If you watched Delos from the beginning, they stopped for a year, wrote code and rolled burritos. The Totem family writes, I still plan on working as we sail.

James Earl Jones once said it took him over 15 years to become an overnight success.
