Passport 45 questions for owners

I'm looking at a 1981 Passport 45, but it's far away and I can't look at it in person unless I'm really serious enough to buy a plane ticket. I'm tall (6'3) and I was wondering if any current or former owners can tell me what the headroom is like in the passthrough to the aft cabin, the aft cabin itself, head, and v-berth.

I'm also wondering if the ballast is lead or iron.

Thank you

Re: Passport 45 questions for owners

Probably better to ask on the owners groups. There's one on Facebook and one on Google groups

Re: Passport 45 questions for owners

I don't have any experience with the Passport, but since it has the same hull as the Kelly-Peterson 44, perhaps owners of those would have some good input too.

I thought this was interesting from sailboatdata:
"Passport 45's are not associated with Passport Yachts. Peter Hoyt used the Passport export license (he was friends with Passport Yachts founder Wendell Renken) to export his yachts from Taiwan."

I had a 1981 Passport 45 (Kanani). I owned her from 1990-2000 and sailed her around the world. The finest sailing vessel (of that size) that I've ever sailed (I was also a delivery captain).

I was 6'5" at the time and never had an issue with headroom. The main salon was 7'. The passageways in the pass-through to the aft cabin was about 6'2" (if I remember correctly) and the floor was slanted in the shape of the hull on the starboard side. To port was the (large) engine room. I never found the headroom to be an issue.

The aft cabin headroom was same as main salon. The aft bunk was massive. 7.5' long, 4'wide at the foot and 9' wide at the head. I built dressers on each side to make it a standard king size bed.

The v-birth, forward stateroom and head were all 7' headroom. The shower stall in the forward head had plenty of headroom and was a nice size.

The ballast is lead.

The weak point on that vessel is the teak deck. 2000 screws into a perfectly good F/G deck is a recipe for disaster on any boat.

If you end up with that boat, feel free to contact me for some helpful tips.
