So, a couple of thoughts... if you have a bridle coming out of the hawseholes, will it interfere with the bow support there? Can lines come out of the hawseholes unimpeded?

I always thought I'd like to add a super beefy fitting about where your support brace bolts to the bow down low there. If it were me I think I'd make that even more substantial and attach a ring there for running the snubber from there instead of up higher. I used to sail a boat with a fitting like that and I really liked it. Just a thought.

I'll let you know about sailing, it is a little cool right now!

When I put together the anchor platform I took into account the hawseholes but having never used a bridle or snubber, fingers crossed! There is sufficient clearance for lines to pass through but....wont know until I use it I suppose.

The support for the bobstay thing is 1/4'' 316 stainless plate, cant remember how hard it is off the top of my head. I haven't made up a backer for it yet. I will likely go with G10 and layup some glass to give it more strength. When you say more substantial do you mean more metal or on the backside?

Also, what type of rung did you use for the snubber? Like a fixed ring or something welded in place like a large ring or big diameter chain link? Now is the time to add or modify it so I'm all ears. Newhaul got my interest peaked in a bridle so that is on my list of things for sure. When you ring to attach this thing is that low, how do you attach it for anchoring? Some sort of clip or do you get down to it and tie it off each time?

Re: Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

I don't have it yet but the boat I used to sail had it like the photo here, but it doesn't seem beefy enough to hold the boat. I'd prefer to see ears, like tangs that bolt through big backing blocks in the bow with a ring welded to the ears as well. I will be the first to say it may be unsightly so it would need to be designed well to look like it belongs there. The other downside is that the snubber is attached there which some may find unsightly too. In your case though it would be within reach to hook the snubber there I think. It is not a necessity, but it does lower the angle on the rode and allows for a little more buoyancy in the bow by moving the downward vector back a bit from the tip of the bow or end of the roller. I have heard it cuts down on sailing at anchor too, but I cannot verify that.

Re: Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

I had a brain fart there. The other main reason boats with bowsprits have the snubber on the lower fitting of the bobstay is BECAUSE the rode will lean on the bobstay when it comes off the roller or out of the hawsehole and the boat is pulled broadside to the wind. This will happen if the boat is sailing at anchor or pulled sideways by a wind or current and it is anchored bow and stern.

It looks to me from your photos that the rode will lean on your "bobstay" support bar, especially if you have chain, when the bow swings.

Re: Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

OK looking at your photos again, I now think the rode coming off your roller will probably not hit the support bar, so it looks like it'll be ok. No need for extra fitting below, though it might be nice to have anyway.

Yer gonna need a 35' slip though!

No worries, I'm still waiting for the webpage link to buy one. Post it up here, more folks may be interested in a robust solution like that.

Re: Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

Having a lower fitting may provide options, so I will have to take a look and see how to best add something like that and make it strong while I' building. Appreciate the input guys and yes, unfortunately not able to fit into a twenty six foot slip with anyone this on it anymore.

Still waiting for my middle boy to get his forging site up and running will sell on there as an offshoot to his knives and custom tools and swords.

But here's a deal

those do look nice, very solid. We had a big set of similar ones from the Ericson Independence 31 we used to have.

Re: Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

Making a little progress, pulled cabinet faces. Laid up several layers of Total Boat Works Halcyon on the Teak and Mahogany. Realized I had forgotten to fill in a few seams with thickened epoxy on the unpainted side so fixed that up. Got the entire port side of the boat done, now working on the starboard. A few before and after.

What do you guys suggest for the top joints withe the frames for the cabinets we have added and the fiberglass? I was floating a few ideas, 3200, 4200, Sika flex or even just white silicon curious what others have used.

Also, painted the first layer int he chain locker. Still lots of work to do but getting closer. Which reminds me, in the process of welding a few tabs onto the anchor platform to attach the teak boards. The paint I used on the inside of these cabinets was again Total Boat epoxy barrier coat, don't try to roll that stuff on in the heat let me tell you. Supposed to be VERY durable so fingers crossed.

On the inside of all the lockers and cabinets above the water line we will be adding foam padding to insulate (should stop condensation) as well as cushion things from bumping around. Plan to do the same in the quarter birth areas.

Still contemplating how to execute the heavy duty D-ring for mooring/anchoring on the bow.

Had to fill in a few spots where damage wood was inside the storage lockers (the floor of them) with some thickened epoxy to get them nice and level before paint.

How are you addressing the anchor locker drain? As factory into the bilge or sealing the locker glossing it in and adding a small thruhull to allow all that crud to be washed directly overboard?

I glassed it all in already and am planning to add a drain above the waterline. Plan to put one of those little clamshell vent cover things over the hole above the water line.
