Any thoughts on route? Do understand that this my not be an ideal time but 70ft monohull must be moved. Have done the pacific coast of us many times but have not started this far south.
Thanks in advance for any advice other than don't do it lol

Re: Panama to coos bay Oregon in January?

Much has been written about the "Legs" of this trip. Basic choices are inshore or offshore. You didn't mention which one.

If inshore, then:

Panama to MX
MX to San Diego
SD to SF
SF to Neah Bay

I've done the last, harbor hopping, Aug 8 - Sept. 16. I studied George Benson's material. All motoring, though. 165 hours.

I've posted our log (with charts & photos) here:

OR, WA and BC offshore in January?

I remember reading your blog and really enjoyed it....I lived through your blog.
I have sailed for almost thirty years from San Miguel Isl in the Channel Island to San Diego. My dream is to sail under the Golden Gate Bridge. I am still hopeful that one day I will in my own boat coming from So Cal...if not I will charter for a day, go under the bridge and back.

This time last year, I singlehanded my boat up from Panama to San Francisco Bay, California, 50/50 sailing and motoring, stops in El Salvador, Mexico, and San Diego.
Don't be a hurry.
Need crew?

You may find some information to help you in this social group's threads. Do you have to do the trip all at once?

How much time do you have?
I would sail up the coast to Puerto Vallarta, head West to Hawaii.
Watch weather and catch the pineapple express to Oregon.
I waited in PV till May for the high pressure to build in the North Pacific, but you may not have that much time, I did <5% motoring.

No! Come as far north as southern California in the winter, then work your way north in the summer. Actually, if you are prudent with each leg you probably won't get much further north than southern California before the weather improves further north.

You went in May, not a problem. Pretty risky to be out that far in the North Pacific in January. To get over the high you need to sail to latitude of Oregon. Up there the lows move in fast, and one or more could be intense.

Re: Panama to coos bay Oregon in January?

Hello mmillerlaw, I did a very similar trip one month earlier than your plan. That is, mid November to mid December. From Costa Rica to Eureka, California. So just a few miles shorter. I chose to go non-stop and finished in 31 days. The boat was a stock Westsail 32 and I used something less than 60 gallons of fuel. Generally, I sailed to the NW initially, paralleling Mexico about 450nm off. I turned more Northward about the US border and closed with the coast near Cape Mendocino. I had no real problems. The boat was prepared for the trip. I would think that a 70’ could accomplish your trip in less than 30 days. Good luck.

You may get lucky off Coos Bay in the winter. Talk to some crab fishermen about what it can be like if you aren't lucky. I wouldn't be out there that time of the year. Sometimes there is a great break in the weather in January but you can't count on it.
