Pacific Seacrest 34 Engine Accessible?

I'm in the market for a classic small heavy displacement cruising sailboat. I am liking the Pacific Seacrest 34, also considering an Allied Seawind II and a Downeaster 32. I've read the ASII and the DE32 don't have great access to the engine--can anyone chime in on the accessibility of the engine on the PSC 34? I understanding that this can mean a world of difference when the inevitable engine troubles arise...

Any other input on these boats is welcome!

Re: Pacific Seacrest 34 Engine Accessible?

I’ve never had the pleasure of working on a PS34, but am intimately familiar with the engine hole on an allied seawind II.

The SWII would be terrible with the original W-30, but a repower to a smaller 3cyl engine makes it tolerable for smaller people. Our boat came with a marinized Kubota 1105 (not a beta). This engine isn’t bad to work on in the space. Normal maintenance is no problem, more exotic stuff makes you curse, but it’s doable. A Beta 30 would make servicing items even easier as the engine is designed to be maintained from the front.

We did replace the standard packing with a mechanical seal, servicing that does require a fleet of midgets well versed in the arts of contortion.

Re: Pacific Seacrest 34 Engine Accessible?

I have had a 1988 PSC 34 since 2004. Engine access is possible from the salon or from the cockpit. I have pulled the engine and transmission out through the cockpit using a chain fall on the boom and put it back through the salon using the chain fall on the boom and a couple of 2x6s. I can enter the engine compartment through the cockpit where I can change the transmission fluid, remove the exhaust elbow, the shaft, or whatever. From the salon I can change the engine oil, replace the raw water impeller, replace the alternator, replace the refrigeration compressor, or whatever.
