Overland Sailboat Hauler MA to VA Recomendations

Hello all,

I'm entertaining the purchase of a Com-Pac 27 up in MA or CT and having it shipped to VA, can anyone recommend a reputable hauler with good equipment?

Thank you,
John Pender

Might be cheaper to buy a trailer and sell it when done. Or use it for winter storage

"Purchase trailer and use for winter storage" that was my first thought, first quote was for a custom built trailer - $10,000 with 20 week wait. I am waiting on additional quotes while looking into shipping costs.

Thank you for taking the time to respond Snore,
John

Good haulers are hard to find. Last October I used Richard Turner at TurnerYachtServices.com. He’s on Kent Island in Maryland, so I don’t know if he’d want to do the haul you want. It’s a part-time gig for him; his other job is, he moves boats for the Secret Service. All I can tell you is, he was amazing. Great communications. He took EXTREME care in loading my boat, transported her safely and efficiently, and didn’t charge an arm and a leg for it. I’d use him again in a heartbeat. I was shocked to note that six months ago, two folks who claim to have been customers said some pretty awful things about him. All I can say is, NEVER did I see the slightest indication of what they claimed. And the fact that he does the Secret Service work makes those claims sound pretty questionable to me. I can only speak for my own experience, which was 100% terrific.

I'd ask New Englanders 1st .. Journey's End in Rockland, ME runs a tight ship. Brownell is a hydraulic trailer builder and leader and they might be bringing a finished or refurb trailer south and like to pick of a load to the destination. Belmont Marine in Belfast ME might have something not too big and be interested. They all move boats up and down the E. Coast and are always scratchin'. Uship can be interesting to do too.

If Brownell has an outfit also, they have to be pretty good. The trailers are called Brownell trailers. They basically invented this game.

I’ve had good luck with these guys:

Independent Boat Haulers

I would say they are the best people in the entire industry. They can get it done.

You might give a call to Mark at Middle River Marine (near Baltimore I believe) 410-591-4377. He hauled my Morgan 34 from Long Island to the head of the Chesapeake in 2017, about $3200 if memory serves. Then he hauled the same boat from Morehead City NC to the head of the head of the Chesapeake (same original destination) in 2020 for $3500. His communication skills are lousy but he did a very professional job for me both times. I have no affiliation with him.

Brownell in Mattapoisett is great, I've used them several times. Also Barden's Boat Yard in Marion does great work as well. Both have first class equipment.
