Those are your mooring bitts (A samson post is a single
unit). They are the strong point to which you tie your anchor
snubber; your forward docklines; the towline when you're being dragged off a sandbar. They are rather bigger than they need to be for that boat, but they're meant to inspire confidence that any rope
will snap before you pull those out.
