opinions on 2 boats for beginner sailor

Hi all,

Would be grateful for opinions on 2 boats I'm considering as a beginner sailor on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes, found 2 interesting options nearby:

1982 Catalina 27

https://fingerlakes.craigslist.org/b...249879614.html

1981 C&C 25

https://fingerlakes.craigslist.org/b...239385891.html

Planning to check them both out as a start on Friday.

Thanks!

There is not much info about the C&C provided on the linked sale listing. Just because a boat won a race in the past does not mean much, by itself, as a statement. There are reasons why, but too time consuming to explain.

The Catalina 27 would be my choice, from these two, based on what has been described and the purpose.

Sails are important. This boat has a newer (2015) Genoa. That is good to see. Take a good look at the mainsail, as it is much older (2002 as I recall). If it is in poor condition, let that affect the price. The ad did not show any interior photos,

Catalina 27 boats are very common. Average condition Boats, which may have worn out sails and interiors, often sell for about $5,000 or sometimes less. So, if this boat has a nice interior and good working inboard engine, and good sails, it would be worth more than average.

The boat engine is important. Make sure it runs well.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Re: opinions on 2 boats for beginner sailor

I've got tons of hours on Catalina 27s over the past 20+ years. If in good condition, it is a solid choice. Condition is everything in older boats. It's worth it to pay several thousand more for a well kept boat. The fastest version of this boat is a tall rig, deep keel, with an outboard. However, I really prefer the inboard for cruising.

Go see lots of boats, the boat will pick you.
That sounds silly, but when you find the right boat, you will know.
