Same basic concept: An interior plywood box that holds the top bearing.

Awwwww, geez. I gotta go stuff my head in the lazarette?

OK.

By the way I tapped it and it all broke and the boat just sank. I am writing this from the bottom of the harbour.

Re: Oceanis 485 steering failure

Plywood structure that supports the rudder and top bearing. About the same thing Beneteau has using for decades on the Oceanis line.

Re: Oceanis 485 steering failure

Denise-SJD posted the following on 18/5/16 "We own a 2014 Oceania 48 and today received a recall notice in order reinforce the rudder post."

As the person that started this forum thread and the guy responsible for chartering the two Oceanis 48's for this vacation, (one a 484, the other Joule which suffered the rudder failure and was totally lost, a 485) I am very interested to know what Beneteau have said about this recall. Are you able to remove any personal content and share a copy of the letter on this forum. The crew of Joule have suffered considerable personal loss - not to say a ruined 16 day Caribbean charter and still have no redress from the charter company. Thanks.

Re: Oceanis 485 steering failure

As Polux has pointed out, this glued together plywood box detail has been used for thousands of Beneteau sailboats to support the rudder assembly. Wouldn't it be a wise thing for people thinking of using boats built this way for offshore sailing but not covered with a recall notice to strengthen this part of the boat. Obviously many boats have been used for offshore and have not suffered a failure but when it does fail it's catastrophic? ?

Sure. I have recommended that to several friends, or at least to check if the assembly is a strong one.

It is not a dificult job since plywood is a very easy material to use. It can be done with plywood and plexus or plywood and tabing getting more support from the hull, bulkhead and even cockpit floor.

Given loads on rudder and possible flexing of the box, I would favor tabbing the ply for anyone who is reading along. Not sure you'd want to trust plexus in this setting.

Re: Oceanis 485 steering failure

can anyone confirm that the fat pipe cut into the aft of the top bearing support plate is in fact the main engine exhaust?
if so and the support plate thrashed around like Blue Pearl is it possible that the exhaust was ripped away from the hull fitting providing a "not obvious from the outside" leak point?

G]
No. Its the engine room blower.
The fan is at the stern. Sucks air out of the engine room.
