Oceanis 390 Mantus Anchor

Greetings. I’m going to swap out the original Bruce 33lb anchor on my Oceanis 390 and will probably go to an M1. I met a fellow owner a few years back in Annapolis who had done this and said the anchor fit well. I wanted to reconnect with him, but have lost his contact.

My question is how did the M1 work out for you and what size did you choose for the 390? M1 sizing chart shows it right at cross over between 35lb and 45lb.

You have a lot of windage as do most modern yachts. Always go one size larger unless you never use it for anything but a lunch hook. Think of it as a life insurance policy.

Re: Oceanis 390 Mantus Anchor

I use a 45lb Mantus M1 on my 38-footer and I wouldn't go smaller, though I think I would be fine 90% of the time. Probably depends too on where you plan on cruising, but I like to have my main anchor capable of handling full gales at anchor.

Re: Oceanis 390 Mantus Anchor

This may depend on where you want to anchor. For there is VAST difference from one type of bottom to another.

In a perfect thick mud anchorage a small anchor will hold a big boat in quite some wind. But in all other cases I would opt for the biggest and heaviest anchor your winch anchor can lift.

45lb does not sound too big at all in a 39 footer with tall topsides like yours.

We have a 30lb anchor in a 26 footer.

Re: Oceanis 390 Mantus Anchor

Thanks, all for the replies. I agree that all else being equal, the larger anchor is a better bet. However, since I met that other owner, I know that he fitted one or the other. And he said it fit the bow well. So I guess I was just hoping he or any other owner could confirm that the 45lb one fits my boat.

Re: Oceanis 390 Mantus Anchor

The 45lb Mantus has a huge hoop, but also the shank is extra long compared to many anchors. That can be a problem with some bow roller setups.
