Re: Not the keel I was expecting

My Tartan 40 is a 4’9” draft listed for keel/CB version. With tons of extra cruising gear above spec, including 200 feet of chain, large battery bank, genset, larger engine , dinghy on davits- it actually draws 5 feet. So I think it’s reasonable your Tartan would bump about that much.
Like others said, email Tim Jackett. I’ve found him responsive on questions with my boat and Tartan just built me a new rudder this winter and he gave me install advice. Also was able to tell me when they switched to vinylester for their boats (mid 80s) which means my boat is full vinylester which is probably why it’s held up so well.
There’s always a place that’s too shallow for you. But it seems that a lot of channels on east coast are dredged to 6 foot MLW so that may affect you.

Great boat though!

Re: Not the keel I was expecting

Thank you all for the advice.

I have been unable to do any more measuring because my limited time at the boatyard (hundreds of miles away) has been consumed by mounting solar panels and replumbing and remounting the water heater. It's still on my list for next weekend's trip.

Re: Not the keel I was expecting

I have had my RM ST60+ depth instrumentation “reset” my offset to ZERO twice. BS on that! I now use no off set but know I will touch at 4.2 if running at 5 knots and 3.5 if inching forward.

My advice is this, your measurement matters littleZ. You depth instrument measurement matters a lot. Some quiet day, no wakes, gradually run her, very gently, up on a sandy shoal just until you touch. Now you know what your depth finder reading is for minimum depth. And that is really all that matters.

Not the keel I was expecting

I’d be curious the actual length of the keel fin from bottom of the hull. If it’s 4 feet, then the issue is a deeper keel, if it’s 3 feet your boat has a lot of immersed hull (eg payload).
My T40 has about 2 feet of hull immersed at the keel level, and about 3 feet of fin (some of which is sump to which keel is bolted)
I bet the 3800 is similar, as are most canoe body hulls in that size range
