Nonsuch 36 1988

Any opinions on this Hinterhoeller built boat?
I searched but did not find much information besides the fact that its hull and deck are balsa cored.

Thanks

Very highly regarded boat and construction. Simple rig, easy to singlehand, yet very good performance. I have not sailed one but it is on my short list of boats to drool over. For me the only down side is I'd rather not have a spade rudder for cruising.

A Mark Ellis design and built by an excellent yard. The boat is not a high pointer with that Cat rig but it sure goes on a reach. Very roomy interior and long waterline. There is a strong following on these boats. Great cruiser!

Well, I keep trying to disprove this but I haven't yet: you get what you pay for. By the way, I hope some Nonsuch owners chime in because I have heard that they don't point very high, and then I have heard from owners that they point just fine. So which is it? I have seen them race very well, and they never change a sail!

I'm not sure exactly how many degrees they lose on a Marconi rig but its certainly very noticeable BUT so what, in the open ocean you really don't want to point real high unless the winds are light. Its a compromise of course but a good one in my mind, no rigging to worry about and an easy sail to work with, makes good cruising sense.

What's wrong with cat rig?

Maybe it is about the hull rather than the rig?

I have sailed some cat rigged boats and man they did point high.

Sure it has a little to do with the hull as these are not deep keeled boats and they were very beamy for their time and the beam was pulled quite a ways forward. I guess a good question for the dinghy guys who race lasers as well as laser 2's but personally I just don't think Cats can point with Marconi rigs.

Doh.

I have read many discussions where the above was the subject. I think what I took from there is that once we go for another rig, things become literally incomparable (due to implied changes in spars/shrouds/stays deployed). I think they think on paper (ex mast, ex rigging, etc.) same area single foil beats a twin foil sail combo (in lift per area). Then again, people who sailed same hull / various rig scows say they in fact point equally high.

So, I think, it all boils down to a particular execution, with any rig.

Re: Nonsuch 36 1988

I have sailed a Nonsuch 26 classic for two years. While Tiroc does not seem to point quite as his as marconi rigs this is not generally a problem. She is fast and easy to sail. Many people have commented on the high build quality of these boats. Last year at the Nonsuch Rendezvous in Toronto I had the chance to visit a 36. A large, beautiful, well built cabin. A very different feel than boats of similar size at the Toronto boat show.

Re: Nonsuch 36 1988

I have a Nonsuch 30C and can confirm that while they may not point as high, the extra speed on a reach combined with the ability to tack instantly with almost no loss of momentum not having to re-sheet the jib more than makes up for it.

As for the deck, it has a balsa core but the construction quality of the Hinterhoeller yard makes this of low concern unless the maintenance around deck fittings, hatches etc. has been neglected.

Pay attention to the mast fittings, the early boats had some issues with the mast joint but these were resolved before your boat of interest was constructed.

I love mine.

Re: Nonsuch 36 1988

If I could afford a decent sized non such, it would be very high on my list. Great for the lakes (built in St Catatharines) and I'm sure equally suitable for the Caribean. Very high build quality.

I have read, that in spit of the high build quality very few if any of these vessels have circ'd because the Cat rig just isn't that great for serious off shore business.

They were built for the Great Lakes, on the smallest Great Lake where maneuverability is king.

Look for a current thread called "salvaging a boat" or some such.

36' nonesuch that ran aground and was a loss. That owner may have an interesting perspective.

Re: Nonsuch 36 1988

Friend at our club has a nonsuch 36, I have sailed along side it and can attest to its speed, My 6.5 knots to his 8 knts, 20-25 knt wind, leaves us far behind. he says he has hit 10 knts with 25-30knt wind on beam, not wave surfing! This is his 3rd boat and gives high praise in its handling and comfort. Great layout inside, i think and in my opinion a great coastal boat but I think that is its limits, I think there would be other chalenges if going to be used for blue water, won't get that deep into it.
