New Zealand to Newfoundland.. sail it or ship it?

Hello, I am zeroing in on a purchase of a 47ft monohull in NZ to bring home to the Canadian Maritimes, probably Newfoundland.

My question is whether it is wiser to ship the boat or to sail it, and how that might be worked into the purchase agreement. Given we cannot fly from Canada to NZ in the foreseeable future, there may be some logic in shipping it during this Covid time.

I wonder if anyone far wiser than I, could comment on this matter?

Many thanks,
Neil

Don't think I'm any wiser than you. I would get a quote on shipping it. Then figure out the cost to sail it and the time. If it's this year doubt you would be allowed to stop anywhere on route. Shipping it might not get it to Newfoundland but somewhere in the states or W coast of Canada then truck it across the Country. You might be wiser to buy something here or in the states or even Europe.

While it may be possible I can’t imagine shipping NZ to NL. IF you could find a ship to take it as deck cargo to NL then you would almost surely need to transfer it from boat to boat.

My complete SWAG is that if you get it shipped from NZ to almost anyplace in the Caribbean basin or SE USA then you can sail it up fairly easily, given the right time of year.

Shipping from NZ to the Carib you avoid the Horn and you don’t have to pay the hefty Canal fees plus go through all that hassle. I’m guessing that making the trip that far gets you 90% of the advantage of shipping. I think you can find some Boat shippers that will be doing that run. There are lots of places in the Caribbean where you can receive your boat. My suggestion would be to get it and move to St Marrten to outfit for the run North.

Do you have a port in NL you are heading to?

I would ship it.

It is a long passage, hard and with risks, whether you take the W or the E delivery route.

Unless you are bent on sailing it for the adventure.

I’m waiting to see the estimated bill for this trip.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that the cost from ST Marrten to NL is close to the cost from NZ to NL.

Not to be argumentative with you Barnikiel, just to see how wacked my guess is.

It may be worth it to you to ship it, or part way, as suggested by hpeer. However, do not imagine the boat in a safety bubble for the trip. It is that the ships travel on their schedules, and they will power into the storms, so your boat needs to be protected agains prolonged hurricane force winds, with the combined ship speed and the winds in the fronts that it goes through. You'll want it insured, sometimes boats on the ships get broken into.

You'll have to work the seasons. I wouldn't want it delivered to the Caribbean during hurricane season. It would be difficult to make satisfactory arrangements for it, plus the insurance costs have skyrocketed.

Can you not find a suitable 47 footer in Canada? Or Europe?

For me, the decision would be based on how much time you have and whether this is a cruise you want to make. If it is a pure delivery to you it might just be work. The cruising ground from NZ to NF you will sail the Indian Ocean and the South Atlantic (if you want to avoid the Suez canal) before you get to any place I want to really cruise. This will be likely the only chance you have to sail these areas so if that is something you want to do, then do it.

Ship it ,
Very expensive to sail it
Also less wear and tear
Spend your quality time sailing around New Zealand then pack up the boat and ship it homec
I understand that at present shipping is expensive
Very few ships

It would be very unusual to find a boat in nz that didn't have a far cheaper equivalent in Europe for sale.

Or in the USA although my experience was 20 years ago, can't imagine it's changed much.

I also understand that you usually need to be present for a fair while with the boat in order to load it, if you find a ship with space and a schedule that includes Auckland. Shipping isn't a cheap or easy solution from here. Not that sailing it wouldn't be, of course

According to the OP’s previous posts he’s looking for a 45 to 55 foot aluminum center board cruiser. Might make sense to focus on France/Holland....the epicenter of those types. Lots of used boats a whole lot closer to home.

At this moment in time travelling abroad has its problems, quarantine and so on.
to find a shipping company is another one, most yacht are shipped as deck cargo tied down to cradles, mast removed etc.
You are looking at anything from 50k up.
In any case you have to import the boat and so on.
I would buy a yacht in Your neck of the woods.

Re: New Zealand to Newfoundland.. sail it or ship it?

I think the OP may have just missed the boat .. so to speak..
Minervagracht is currently in Auckland loading a part cargo of yachts from there to Europe via Papeete and Panama ... having already picked up quite a few in Newcastle NSW

Cost ? Dunno

Chance of getting direct shipping to NFL ? Somewhere south of Zero.

Transhipment costs? Rather high

Sail or buy local....

Re: New Zealand to Newfoundland.. sail it or ship it?

I have to agree with the buy elsewhere option. All the previous threads I have read about shipping the costs for a yacht of that size for any but very short distances were well over $10,000, mostly in the $20-30 range and that was from major port to major port. I think $50k all the way to SE Canada very possible.

Unless this is a unique, one of a kind, super deal boat, considering the cost, risks, potential wear and tear even sitting on deck I would say buy in US, EU or Caribbean.
