New Insurance

Hi all,

I'm in need of help re: Marina Driscol Mission Bay San Diego requiring new Insurance coverage policy.

I have 41 ft. 1976 Formosa Ketch.
It's not in tip top shape.

I'm trying to avoid an out of water survey or any survey for that matter.

Boat's solid, needs nothing done to hull but could use a couple thru hulls and probably zincs.

I have existing coverage with Progressive and have been with them for @ 20years.
Now Driscol won't accept Progressive

I can't find any Insurance coverage to satisfy the Marina's new requirements...
It's just Liability coverage.
Marina wants wreckage liability and Insurance providers won't provide more than $7,500. Which isn't satisfying Marina's supposed requirements.

Suggestions?
Thx!

I have a surveyor coming by to do a walkthrough before I hire for a full either out of water or in water survey.

Re: New Insurance

There are basically zero slips available anywhere in San Diego.
Waiting lists months. Nope, not even mooring balls.
Not that easy...
Born and raised here.
But, unfortunately as you've probably noticed, all the (mostly) native californians are moving...Texas being one of the destinations... sorry bout that..
I'd love to move this rig to Texas!
California is totally @!cked now.

Re: New Insurance

I am sure your marina knows that too and makes me think they are giving you unreasonable demands to force you out and bring in someone who is on “the list”.

Re: New Insurance

Let's be honest here. You have some sketchy seacocks that could potentially sink your vessel. Should the boat sink, you don't have sufficient insurance to pay for the recovery, leaving Driscoll's on the hook should you decided to walk away.
Boat ownership comes with responsibilities such as maintaining the vessel in seaworthy condition and obtaining sufficient insurance to cover mishaps. I see no fault with Driscoll's asking you to have wreckage liability.

My suggestion would be to get those seacocks repaired/replaced ASAP and call a marine insurance broker, such as Oversea Insurance, so they can find you the best rate on liability and wreckage insurance.

Re: New Insurance

Thanks buddy,
Preaching to the Choir never gets you anywhere.
You don't need to tell me about responsibilities of Boat Ownership.
I've owned and sailed boat for @60years.

If you had a clue re: Driscol and their water/dock management you wouldn't be singing that old song.

Boaters causing oil slicks from leaky diesel motors, flushing from illegal dumping, trash in the marina is an ongoing issue at Driscol, and they take minimal actions if any to resolve and stop these problems.
Life guard boats are there on a monthly basis due to calls re: gas/diesel spills in the marina!

And, I'm fully aware of what an unkempt thru hull and valve device can do.

This Marina's management is totally inept, yet I'm going to accommodate them and do the proper maintenance to get my boat surveyed to update the insurance and of course it's "Proper Boat Ownership". LOL
