You can research different makes and models all you like. But in the end, you have to choose from whats available for sale in your area.

I strongly recommend looking for a Sandpiper. It is a 19 foot drop keel fractionally-rigged sloop. Very well mannered under sail and can handle a fair amount of weather, it sails like a 24 footer. Large, safe cockpit and good deck layout. Makes a good weekender for a couple. Easily powered by a 5 h.p. outboard. Can be safely beached with the centerboard cranked up.

Re: Need trailerable daysailer recommend

I started out with an O’day daysailor with 2 small kids if you don’t plan to overnight. Roomy cockpit for 4 and cuddy cabin for gear. Fairly easy to raise and lower mast for 2 adults and retractable center board for easy launch from a trailer and retrieve. It will also handle a small outboard for ease in getting away from launch area or back again. If you want to overnight then you probably want a minimum of 20-22 ft.and still trailer.

You have to look at the Macgregor 26 (water ballasted) boats: simple to launch and recover, tons of internal space for camping, and very inexpensive/great value but easy to customize. I had one of the old Cast iron swing keel Mac 25s for 9 years on a lake and for trailing & coastal cruising and my wife and two young children would “overnight” very comfortably - so much fun! I have owned about 9 boats over the last 50 years (ouch!) from 10’ to my present Cornish Crabber 22 in the UK and my Lagoon 420 in North Carolina: the MacGregor was wonderful! Good Luck & just do it!

Just rent a boat once a month when you get a chance. Trailer sail boats are great for fit adults, but dangerous with small children to herd while you launch/load.

There probably are some macgregor models that would fit your requirements. Just beware, not all macs are equal. 26 Cs and Ds might be worth considering. They are a bit bigger than i would like for day sailing, but trailerable, in your weight range and nice for overnights.

This 26C doesn't look far from Montreal.

I fail to see how this could be bad news.

Talk to to them and explain your schedule is awkward. Maybe they can give you chores you can do on your own schedule. Repairs and such that aren't urgent. If they are ok with that it sounds like a good plan.
