Need to Know ! 1972 Catalina Fin Keel - Is it Lead ?

I am junking a 1972 Catalina 22 and need to know if the keel is lead or the disposal guy wont take it. Is there anyone that know if a 1972 Catalina pop top fin keel is lead? The serial number is K63. If anyone knows how to find out please reply. Thanks!

if its origional.... the lead keels were not avalable until the late 90s and even then the keel was a steel frame with lead in the bottom end..
the origional keel was made of cast iron and inported from Mexico..
some older boats that lost the their keels wer allowed by racing rules to up-grade to the newer lead keel..
one of the issues with the origional keel was being of cast iron, it would wobble out the pivot pin hole.. the keel would have to be pulled and modified in that area..
If your keel is origional, its "PIG IRON" or cast iron and only worth , nothing.......no real market for cast iron
what you might do, is find someone building a boat that needs balist..
think it weighs around 4 to 5 hundred lbs.....
also post it on the catalina 22 site or call "Catalina Direct" which is a small company out of Rancho Cordova, east of Sacramento and see if they have a sorce to out-sorce it.. they may know someone that needs one..
being they are only held on by a pivot bolt, they do wear throu the cast or the bolt and fall off..

thanks. it doesn't have a pivot bolt though. it is a fixed keel with keel bolts. it is a fixed fin keel not a retractable keel. does that mean it is still iron? thanks!

G'Day mate,

A simple test with a magnet will determine whether the keel is iron or not!

Cheers,

Jim

Have you considered calling Catalina Yachts and asking them?

I agree with the magnet.
I thought our International Folkboat had a lead keel until I took a magnet to it.
