Need a compromise boat

After losing the Southern Cross 31 on the rocks, I have decided to start looking into another boat. The Southern Cross was a great sea boat, I single handed it from North Carolina to Scotland visiting the Caribbean and Bermuda on the way (see "loose cannon on deck" Amazon book) that boat only cost me 8000 dollars and was great for the journey, but not great for the five years I lived on it in Scotland

I am going to look for a boat over 30 feet, not a full keel as they are a bit cramped for living onboard, but a boat that is tough spacious has an aft cabin either under cockpit or as a centre cockpit. Has more space than the southern cross, and potentially could cross an ocean.

I have been looking at moody 33, also Jenneau 30 (though it's a bit light) and westerly 30 and up, anyone got any ideas, I don't have a huge budget so don't say halberd rassay. Or swan.

If you are willing to look at steel there are a couple in this yachtworld search that would do.

Tregowry, Danish Rose, Ebbtide all look interesting. Others also.

Steel is heavy, but that buys you interior volume and head room in a shorter length. True with heavy glass boats as well.

Yes, thought about steel, some years ago looked at a Bruce Roberts, I don't though want to buy outside of uk, and I am looking for more a recognised design. Something, heavy, spacious and solid. Speed dosent matter. I could get a good deal in USA but the sail back is awful, then last one I had to pay the vat twenty percent of value, makes it not worth it.

I think the way I presented the list was miss leading.

There are 2 UK boats in the list and several more from the Netherlands, Germany and there abouts. I’ve not one clue how Brexit effects this.

Anyway, if you are still interested, try this following links for what I had initially intended to send you.

Here’s hoping you get better help from others.

I was always impressed by the amount of room a Van Der Stadt 34 has. A lot more room than my old UFO 34 had and made the S&S 34 look positively cramped. They come in steel, aluminium or wood epoxy plus masthead or fractional rig. The one’s with an aft cabin under the cockpit sounds like what you are looking for.

Re: Need a compromise boat

That's a very nice boat, at the top end of my budget though. As a skilled welder a steel I wouldn't be apprehensive about working on the boat, the drawbacks are questions about the dissimilar metals used on it and how they react with each other. But it's certainly a nice solid boat.

Earliest I will buy is this summer, so for now it's just research.

Yes that is the sort of boat I am looking for, but there seem to be none in Europe. The top of my list just now is a moody 33. Don't want more than ten meters due to marina fees. I also like some jennaeus but with the ones in my size range, I would doubt there sea keeping abilities.

May I ask, what the issues were living on this vessel in Scotland?

Hi Atlantical. You mention that you are "looking for more a recognised design. Something, heavy, spacious and solid. Speed dosent matter."

For what it's worth, the Ebbtides mentioned by others were designed by Alan Pape in the UK who produced some extremely good offshore designs. I believe they are either 33 or 36ft. I have inspected one in Australia and would have thought the design meets most if not all of your requirements. Certainly heavy and solid and reasonably spacious for a 36 footer. The 36 footer I looked at had a rear cabin, full height saloon and double forward. It did have a long keel though.

If a Van De Stadt 34 is too expensive I would also look at a UFO 34 and a S&S 34. Should be plenty available in the UK, particularly UFO’s. These links provide a good summary.
