Re: Moody 54 vs Hylas 54 bolted keels, a no no?

Bolted fin keels

I’ve always been told by old salty dogs never to consider blue water
Sailboats that have bolted on keels

They always say get the lead keel that is incorporated inside the hull
So no bolts to corrode and no chance of keel falling off and capsizing the boat

Both the moody and hylas 54 which are clearly well made, high end Water boats">blue water boats
Have exactly what I was always advised to avoid: bolted on keel

If these boats are top quality build and high end
Why are they made with bolted on keels, unlike oysters, benetau & jeneau

What sort of added maintenance do bolted keels require
And has anyone heard of these corroding and the 20,000 lbs keel falling off risking a catastrophic capsize?

Sorry, but you are misinformed. Every Oyster ever made has a bolted on keel, just like every Swan, every Hallberg Rassey, and all other cruising and racing boats in the world in the last 30 years or so with rarest exceptions of oddball retro boats like Rustlers, and Island Packets, and some one-offs.

One keel did fall off of one Oyster once (which led to lawsuits by the Russian owner which bankrupted the company), but that was a freak accident. No keel has ever fallen off a Hylas, Moody, or Hallberg Rassey as far as I know. There is nothing wrong with this technology. It's the best way to attach a higher aspect deep keel.

You need to find some different "old salty dogs" to advise you, preferably less than 90 years old, and who have been out sailing on a boat less than 30 years old.

Re: Moody 54 vs Hylas 54

Repairing an encapsulated keel after a hard grounding has it's own set of issues. Both construction methods have advantages but it's easier to repair a lead keel after grounding provided you don't rotate the keel.

Find yourself some older, more salty (read - better informed) dogs from whom to take advice. That is nonsense.
