Re: Monohull for Florida/Bahamas/Caribbean
I can't tell you what to do, but I will tell you what my wife and I are doing. We are looking for a boat for very similar use to yours. Mostly weekends and a few weeks now and then up and down the west coast of Florida (where we live). Eventually cruises farther afield, to the Bahamas for sure, maybe all the way down the eastern Caribbean islands.
We are looking for something in the 35-40 foot range (and considering a few as small as 32' or as large as 45'). We really, really want a draft of no more than 5'. We might consider 5'-3" or so for the absolute perfect boat in every other way. But knowing how shallow the water is around here and in the Bahamas (where we have chartered several times) I consider 5'-6" to be just too deep. Most especially, because there are a good number of boats available, which will meet our needs very well, that have shallower drafts than that. Neither I, nor my wife, want to compromise where we can go just so we can have extra room that we don't really need.
Anyway, that's how we look at it.

Re: Monohull for Florida/Bahamas/Caribbean
Boatie, that boat would cost close to 200K delivered to Fl?
As always with these threads, budget is the biggest driver I believe as to which boat, and we don't have a budget yet?

Don't be silly.. a Transat would cost you around $10K on top of the negotiated price to the BVI's.. including the return flight to Europe..
Which is less than $150K if you paid the asking price..

The price is listed in Euros and GBP....Not exactly the same as USD

Re: Budget -- more than we can spend, unfortunately.
We need to move from California, find a place on land, etc.
We are looking to stay under $100k - we don't want a big boat loan and don't have cash at the ready to make a big purchase so a loan would be a necessity.

Boats in Florida will only get cheaper the closer to summer you get, a lot of northerners like dumping their boats instead of taking them back up north this time of year.
I think you'd beat look for boats around Tampa, across indiantown to ft Lauderdale..south of that they tend to be "projects" where people lived aboard them and/or with black mold issues as it doesn't stay cold enough/long enough to kill off mold spores..
N.C. And north much better place to boat shop, farther north the better...just wrong time of year to buy up there as boats up there are seasonal, and it's season time now...in the fall they give boats away as that's when payments for winterization, storage, next years dockage are due...

Helps to know the numbers.. and cash restrictions.. no way you'd get a loan on a boat in Europe methinks.
Thanks.. will leave you to the E coasters with one caution.. many will have been broken at some time by storms.. and not disclosed.. tread wary and good hunting..

I had no idea really, I was assuming to would cost $10,000 just to get the boat in condition for the trip
